President Donald Trump has reignited talk of regime change in Iran, even as uncertainty surrounds the full extent and consequences of recent United States (US) airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, June 22, 2025, Trump claimed that Iran’s current regime appears incapable of making the country great.
“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change?” Trump wrote on Truth social post.
The post followed a series of public assurances from Trump’s top officials on Sunday, who stated that regime change was not the objective of the U.S. operation.
Trump Hints at Iran Regime Change
On Sunday, June 22, Vice President JD Vance told NBC’s Meet the Press that the United States is not at war with Iran, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the strikes were not intended to bring about regime change.
“The mission was not an attack on Iran; it was not an attack on the Iranian people. This was not a regime change move. This was designed to degrade and/or destroy three nuclear sites related to their nuclear weaponization ambitions, and that was delivered on yesterday,” Rubio said.
Additionally, Rubio cautioned Iran that the U.S. is prepared to pursue diplomacy, stating that a mutually beneficial deal is possible for Iran, its people, and the international community.
However, he warned that choosing a different path would come with consequences.

Retaliation Plan Against the US
Iran pledged to defend itself on Monday, a day after the US unleashed 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on the mountain housing Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility.
As American officials urged Tehran to exercise restraint, anti-war demonstrations began to surface in cities across the United States.
At the same time, Tehran warned it would retaliate after the US attack on its nuclear facilities by striking American military installations across the region.
It also kept up pressure on Israel, launching a ballistic missile early Monday, 23, 2025; however, the Israeli Defence Forces successfully intercepted.

Iran army chief warns US
Iran’s Army Commander-in-Chief, Major General Amir Hatami, has issued a stern warning to the United States on June 23, vowing a response to any further acts of aggression from United States.
“Americans have received a decisive response every time they have committed crimes, and it will be the same this time,” Hatami said.
He also accused Washington of being the primary instigator behind the latest attacks.
