A video went viral on June 27, capturing youth lighting a fire at night, with netizens claiming that it happened in Githurai 45, in the wake of alleged police shooting.
The Kenya Times has since established that video was three years old and was not recorded in Kenya.
After a deep dive into fact-checking, we further established that it was recorded during a fire festival in Ghana on August 21, 2021.
Kenyans online had questioned how such an event could have taken place in Githurai, especially considering the tragic incident that claimed some lives.
The Bugum Chugu festival is a special celebration called a fire festival, which normally happens in the first month of the lunar year by the Dagombas in the northern region of Ghana.
This festival takes place in the ninth month of the year, which is known as the month of fire.

About Ghana Fire Festival linked to Githurai
During this festival, around 500,000 people from the northern region, including those living in the southern part of Ghana, come together. The people of Dagbon enjoy by playing Ziem and dancing during the celebrations.
They use traditional tools like cutlasses and torches, and some people dress up like warriors for the festival. On the day of the festival, nobody works because it’s a time for everyone to join in the celebration.

Throughout the night, laughter, stories, and traditional foods are shared among the villagers. As the bonfire slowly burns out, each person takes home a piece of the smoldering wood as a symbol of luck and protection for the year ahead.
The Fire Festival is a time of unity, joy, and cultural heritage for the people of Ghana. It is a tradition that has been passed down through generations, a testament to the rich tapestry of traditions and beliefs that make up the vibrant culture of this West African nation.
