A United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Belgut Constituency, Kericho County, was cut short after party members protested the way the gathering was being conducted on September 19.

The disagreement reportedly involved grassroots officials and party delegates, with some members raising concerns about how party officials were engaging with them.

Members accused officials of failing to consult grassroots members regularly on party activities and questioned the distribution of party merchandise, including T-shirts and caps.

“We need sitting allowance, like how we have heard in other areas. But today we have not received even traveling allowance,” Patrick Korir, a Nyabangi delegate, stated during an interview on September 19 with Citizen.

The members further raised concerns over travel allowances, with some delegates alleging that they had not received the payments.

Others expressed dissatisfaction, saying the people of Belgut will not be undermined like other areas.

Tensions escalated during the meeting, prompting some members to walk out of the venue while others chanted “one term”.

Following the disruptions, UDA officials sought police intervention as the situation became increasingly tense, leading to the early termination of the meeting.

Grassroots Election Disruptions

On September 12, 2026, a delegates’ meeting attended by Deputy Party Leader Kithure Kindiki was also disrupted by violence.

During the incident, police reported that six vehicles were torched, three police officers were injured, and one person died.

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire said people who were not registered for the meeting tried to enter before clashes erupted outside the venue.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar later called for investigations by the IEBC and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

“We call upon the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to commence immediate, impartial and expeditious investigations into the violence, destruction of property and inquiries reported at Nembure,” Hassan Oman stated.

UDA Grassroots Elections

UDA’s official website notes that the party’s grassroots elections are part of efforts to establish structures at polling-center, ward, constituency, and county levels.

In January 2026, UDA’s National Elections Board announced repeat polling-center elections in selected areas as it sought to conclude the first stage of the exercise.

The party has also recently announced further timelines for its grassroots electoral process, including Phase II ward-level elections scheduled for October 3, 2026, in 13 counties.

Counties targeted during the grassroots elections include Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo, Kisii, Samburu, Nandi, Vihiga, Baringo, Nakuru, Mombasa, Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi.

According to officials in the party, more than 543,000 polling-center officials had been elected during the 2026 exercise, with each polling center electing 20 officials.

Registration and Requirements

Registration opened on September 12, 2026, and is scheduled to close on September 27 at 5 pm with candidate verification set for September 28.

The party’s National Elections Board has waived the registration fee for the current Phase II ward elections, following an earlier fee structure in the grassroots election guidelines.

Candidates must be registered UDA members and meet the eligibility requirements for the position they seek.

The party’s guidelines state that elected or nominated UDA MCAs and officials elected at the polling-center level can contest ward-level positions.

Aspirants registering through the party’s system are required to provide their personal and location details, a valid telephone number, and a passport-size photograph for use in the electoral process.

For voters, UDA’s rules require participants to be listed in the party membership register and to present the original identification document or passport used during registration when voting.
