The U.S embassy in Nairobi has issued a warning to its citizens over toxic chemical spill on Kenyan highway on Saturday, July 20.
In a statement the embassy raised concerns over the spill of sodium cyanide chemical from an overturned truck in Kambembe area of Rironi, Kiambu County.
“Sodium cyanide spilled from an overturned truck in the Kambembe area of Rironi, Kiambu County. Sodium cyanide is extremely toxic,” stated the embassy.
Further, the embassy gave alternative routes for people using Waiyaki way and the junction to Narok (B3) to use Limuru road as a detour.

Likewise, the National environment Management Authority (NEMA) in a statement on Sunday, July 21, reported that some containers were missing.
The authority cautioned the public against contact with the contents of the containers as they are extremely harmful, and they should immediately report to the nearest authority in case they spot the containers.

“The public is cautioned that the contents of the containers are extremely harmful and should immediately report to the nearest police station or Chiefs’ office if they spot the containers,” Nema stated.
However, preliminary reports have revealed that only one jerrican of the poisonous gas has been re-covered with others still missing.
Earlier, the Ministry of Health (MOH) advised the public on signs and symptoms in case one came into contact with the chemical.
“Initial symptoms of poisoning include headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting, progressing rapidly to unconsciousness and convulsions in severe cases,” advised the ministry.
Repeated exposure, even at lower levels, can cause long-term health issues such as neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.

The environmental impact is also severe, with the chemical posing a significant threat to aquatic life.
Although the compound degrades over time, its initial impact is often catastrophic.
Further, the ministry emphasized the importance of using proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like gloves, masks, and eye protection when handling sodium cyanide.
