As succession politics intensify in the Mt. Kenya region and 2027 elections beckon, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua remains a man under siege. Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is among the names being proposed to take over the mantle.
Waiguru, a seasoned civil servant has previously hinted at vying for the country’s top job even though she is holding her cards close to her chest.
In a media interview on Wednesday, September 25, the Kirinyaga Governor indicated that she was not ready to settle for nothing short of the presidency.
“There is no position that you go for called deputy president. There is no position on the ballot box that says deputy president.
There is a position of the president, who chooses the running mate, someone he thinks he can work well with,” said Waiguru.
Asked whether she would consider the deputy president position, Waiguru stated she would reveal her plans in time.
“If you have no ambition, you have no place in politics. I have ambitions and time will come for those ambitions.
As a political leader, you need to position yourself and be in a place where you want to carry out the role you want,” she said.
Waiguru Rallies Women Leaders
Waiguru also called on women leaders in the country to step up and run for top political positions in the country, urging them to strategize and work hard to get the seats they want.
” I hope there shall be women in top positions. I have no apologies for saying that. I think women can and should position themselves for positions they want.
No one will come to your house to give you the positions. Women have to go after these positions. They need to strategise and understand the political games,” she added.
Additionally, Waiguru emphasized that the G7 meeting set for Thursday, September 26, 2024, aims to encourage women to bolden up, create platforms, build alliances, and position themselves in a bid to win top political positions in the country.
“We have two of our lady governors as chairs of two major parties UDA and ODM. I hope that others will come in from parliament or governors to do that,” she explained.

He claimed that he had been removed from the State House WhatsApp group, a move that made it difficult to align his diary with the president’s therefore leaving him unaware of some events the head of state was attending.
Ruto, who is attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, is yet to comment on his deputy’s remarks.
In the run-up to the 2022 elections, Waiguru was among potential running mates for William Ruto, who was vying for president.
She remains a person of interest in the Mt Kenya politics even as she completes her second and final term as Governor.
Before joining elective politics, Waiguru served in President Uhuru Kenyatta‘s pioneer Cabinet in 2013.
