The County Government of Kiambu headed by Governor Kimani Wamatangi on May 17, 2025, issued a 30-day eviction to traders ahead of a planned development project.
According to the notice from the Department of Trade and Investments, businesses, illegally occupying the Githurai Phase 2 construction site must vacate to pay the way for development.
Areas around Phase 1 gates and the modern market are also to be affected.
“County Government of Kiambu hereby issues this formal notice to all individuals and businesses currently occupying the Githurai Phase 2 construction site,” read part of the statement from the Department of Trade and Investments County Government of Kiambu.

“Including those operating outside the gates of Phase 1 and around the modern market, without legal authorization,” The department of Trade and Investments further specifies.
The notice is in accordance with the pursuant of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act 2019 and the Public Health Act, Cap 242.
“Unauthorised occupation and erection of temporary or permanent structures on public land designated for development is unlawful and constitutes encroachment on public property, “The department of Trade and Investments states.
Why the eviction notice is issued
In the process of initiating the next development phase, the government will implement the construction of new facilities to accommodate additional licensed traders in a safe and organised environment.

According to Governor Kimani Wamatangi and his administration, the respective occupants of the area whether legally or illegally should evacuate.
“To facilitate this development, it is necessary to clear the construction site and its immediate surroundings of all illegal structures and unauthorised occupants.”
The eviction period length
The devolved unit stated that the affected traders have thirty days to vacate the area.
“Accordingly, the County Government of Kiambu hereby issues a THIRTY (30) DAY EVICTION NOTICE, effective from the date of this notice to all persons and traders occupying the site and its surroundings illegally.”

“All affected parties are required to vacate the premises and remove any structures within this period,” The department of Trade and Investments explained.
Business operators who fail to observe the stated terms will be subjected to forceful eviction, and the illegal structures will be brought down.
This will be acted in accordance with the laws that are in place to govern public land and urban development.
“Failure to comply with this notice will result in forcible eviction and demolition of illegal structures, as permitted under the relevant laws governing public land and urban development,” the notice clarified.
