We Can No Longer Depend on Handshakes – Moses Kuria Says of Uhuru & Ruto Meeting

Senior Government Advisor Moses Kuria has broken his silence over the state of political developments in the country after President William Ruto and former president Uhuru Kenyatta met yesterday.

In a personal statement released on Tuesday, December 10, Kuria highlighted the anger and frustration within the Mount Kenya region, especially since the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kuria has praised the meeting between Uhuru and Ruto, saying that it as a sign of prioritizing national interests over personal differences.

“If there was a time when sobriety, selflessness, patriotism, and putting the interests of the nation above self was badly needed, it is now.

“If the economy totally collapses and Kenya becomes a failed state, none will be the winner. Closing ranks and forgiving each other is much easier than having to deal with the aftermath of a failed nation-state,” he stated.

Moses Kuria on Mount Kenya Politics

According to the government advisor, the widespread anger and emotions arising from the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are understandable and natural.

However, reasoning and objectivity rather than anger and emotions should be the guiding factors in how the region handles the political crisis.

“Many from the region, including President Kenyatta, President Kibaki and myself, worked very hard to extricate our region from the 41-against-1 isolation that was occasional by the 2007 General Elections and the violence that followed.

“Getting our region back to that isolation is outrightly selfish and irresponsible,” he added.

Additionally, he has commended Uhuru Kenyatta for taking a moderate approach to regional politics and avoiding populist tendencies.

“Firstly, we can no longer depend on handshakes and personal meetings to make us feel safe in our country. The frequent handshakes and artificial formations have vindicated President Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila on the BBI initiative.

The Return of BBI and Jubilee

Consequently, Moses Kuria has called on a new Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) asking Uhuru, Kenyatta and Azimio leader Raila Odinga to work on a constitution that will help Kenya move forward.

“They were right, and we were wrong. I urge President Ruto, President Kenyatta, and Prime Minister Odinga to close ranks and lead the nation in picking from where BBI flopped and give this country a Constitution that speaks to the emerging realities of our nation and our society.

“BBI Season 2 is urgent and cannot wait,” he added.

Also, he has urged that it is important for all political parties from the Mount Kenya region to come together under the Jubilee party.

“However, it is not too late. We will now embark on bringing all the political parties with a footing in the region together under the Jubilee Party.

“We did it in 2016 when we dissolved parties to form Jubilee. We will do it again. Jubilee under President Kenyatta as the Party Leader is the way to go,” he noted.
