When Uhuru Kenyatta handed over power to William Ruto on September 13, 2022, he became the second Kenyan president since the return of multiparty democracy to complete two terms and peacefully transfer power to a successor.
Four years later, the former Head of State remains active in regional diplomacy, party affairs, and select public engagements, while maintaining a private life away from the day-to-day operations of government.
Transition From State House
Uhuru left office after completing the constitutional two-term limit following his election in 2013 and re-election in 2017.
Since then, he has kept a relatively low public profile compared to his years in office, making occasional appearances at national events, diplomatic forums, and political gatherings.
As a retired president, Uhuru Kenyatta enjoys the benefits provided under Kenyan law for former Heads of State.
Regional Peace and Diplomacy Roles
In 2025, the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community appointed him to support mediation efforts in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The former president has since participated in several regional and continental meetings focused on peace and security.
His diplomatic engagements have also included participation in African Union peace initiatives and high-level consultations involving leaders from across the continent.
Continued Influence in Jubilee Party
Despite stepping down from public office, Uhuru remains an influential figure within the Jubilee Party.
Uhuru has maintained that he is not seeking a political comeback and has instead focused on overseeing the party’s transition processes in line with its constitution.
The former president has occasionally commented on national issues and has criticized some policies of the current administration, particularly in areas where he believes gains made during his tenure have been reversed.
Addressing a political gathering in Narok County via a phone call facilitated by his brother, Muhoho Kenyatta, in May 2026, Uhuru maintained that although he has no intention of seeking elective office, he remains an active member of the Jubilee Party and has every right to campaign for it.
Uhuru Kenyatta, however, dismissed calls pushing him to retreat from public life, insisting that retirement from office does not strip him of the right to participate in politics.
Beyond politics, Uhuru has continued participating in leadership forums, youth empowerment events, and development discussions.
Uhuru has frequently used such platforms to advocate for integrity in leadership and public service, and to promote opportunities for young Africans.

Speaking at a wedding in April 2023, where he left early to attend a family meeting, Uhuru himself emphasized the importance of family time in his post-presidency time.
“You know no one works forever. At the end of it all we all go to family, and I have to ensure that everything there goes well as I also attend to other matters outside here.”
Uhuru is married to Margaret Kenyatta, and together they have three children: Jomo, Ngina, and Njaba.
He is the son of former President the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina Kenyatta, members of one of Kenya’s most prominent families.
