Molo Member of Parliament Kuria Kimani has explained why more than 900 students and over 100 teachers from his constituency spent the night at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Speaking in an interview, Kuria said the educational trip had attracted many learners, making it difficult to complete all the planned activities and return to Molo on time.
“The children were very many. It got late, but we could not take them anywhere else because of existing regulations. If the kids didn’t sleep well, I also didn’t sleep well,” he said.

Kuria Kimani said he spoke to both the parents and the children, explained the situation to them, and they understood and were comfortable with it.
The trip involved 920 learners from more than 20 schools in Molo Constituency, accompanied by over 100 teachers and several parents who joined the excursion to help supervise the children.
According to Kuria, the educational tour was fully financed and coordinated by his office, with the facilitation covering transport, meals and teachers’ allowances.
The learners traveled to Nairobi aboard more than 20 school buses, some of which had been sourced from neighboring Kuresoi North Constituency.

During the visit, they toured the Parliament of Kenya, the National Museum of Kenya, the Nairobi Railway Museum and the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
At Parliament, Kuria said he invited several leaders and parliamentary officials to interact with the students, including Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, Eldas MP Adan Keynan and officers from the Serjeant-at-Arms Department.
Kuria Kimani noted that Parliament was also hosting many other schools on the same day, contributing to delays in the programme.
“We didn’t expect we were going to be late and we didn’t anticipate it. There were also many other students and schools at Parliament,” he said.
Why They Spent the Night at KICC
By the time the learners completed their tour, it was already night, making it impossible for the buses to begin the return journey without violating the Ministry of Education’s directive barring school vehicles from operating after 6 p.m.

Rather than risk the children’s safety, the organizers say they decided that the learners, teachers and accompanying parents would spend the night at KICC.
Kuria Kimani said he personally contacted parents to explain the situation and also addressed the learners, assuring them that they were safe.
“I called the parents and explained what had happened. I also spoke to the children, and they were okay. They were happy and comfortable,” he said.
The MP added that all the learners and teachers were provided with supper before spending the night at the convention centre.
Kimani Kuria said he remained with the group throughout the night and only left when the school buses departed for Molo.
