A Nairobi court has released former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga on a Ksh.100,000 cash bail.
Njenga, who was freed on Tuesday, July 25 in accordance with a ruling by the magistrate, also got an alternative Ksh200,000 bond.
Police arrested Njenga on Wednesday, July 19 and held incommunicado’ until Monday, July 24 when officers presented him at the Makadara Law Courts.
This was after his family members reported him missing, mounting pressure on the state to produce him in court or set him free.
Maina Njenga Charged with Possession of Weapons
Moreover, Maina Njenga and the co-accused were charged with five counts of possessing weapons for felony and trafficking narcotic drugs.

The charge sheet indicated that they had been found with 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus and three plows.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the weapons raised a presumption that they were going to be used to disrupt public order.
Likewise, Njenga was charged alongside his brother Peter Kamunya and Felix Lakishe
The trio were charged with a second count of committing a felony by being in possession of the weapons at Njenga’s home in Kiserian, Kajiado County.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons jointly organized an unlawful assembly and procession scheduled to take place within Nairobi City County and other parts of the country.
However, Njenga and co-accused denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia.
Nonetheless, the DPP opposed the release on bond of Maina Njenga but not to the second and third accused persons.

The prosecution argued that Maina Njenga may commit more crimes or offences considering his record as he was recently charged in a Nakuru court.
“The recovery of offensive weapons from the accused and the Nakuru case is similar to this one, Njenga is a repeat offender. If released Njenga is likely to continue perpetuating similar crimes,” the prosecution told the court.
