Chief Officer for Environment in Nairobi, Geoffrey Mosiria, has gone after churches that make noise in residential areas.
This follows complaints from residents of Claycity in Kasarani, who have raised concerns about persistent noise pollution caused by a local church.
“I wish to inform the residents of Claycity that we have already served the church with a notice to stop the noise pollution,” Mosiria stated. He further warned that failure to comply would result in enforcement actions, including arrests and prosecution, that were in line with the law.
The County Government of Nairobi has been at the forefront of cracking down on noise pollution in Nairobi.
Mosiria’s Crackdown on Noise Pollution in Churches
This follows public outcry that, despite multiple efforts to engage Nairobi County officials, no resolution has been achieved.
However, this is not the first time Mosiria has taken action against noisy churches. In 2024, he intervened at a church in Mwiki, Kasarani, after repeated complaints from residents over excessive noise.
During an overnight prayer service (kesha), he stormed into the premises and firmly instructed the church to reduce the volume to acceptable levels.
In response to the growing concern over noise pollution, Nairobi County introduced strict regulations aimed at curbing noise from matatus, churches, and businesses that play loud music, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental order and public peace.

Noise Pollution in Bars
On April 28, 2025, he flagged Orchid Bar and Restaurant along Ngong Road for excessive noise that cause disturbance to nearby residents and giving them sleepless nights.
“We must always address any form of environmental pollution within our city and ensure compliance with the required sound decibel limits -35 dB at a distance of 30 meters from the establishment,” he said.
Further, he stated that all restaurants operating in residential areas must not disregard zoning regulations by functioning as nightclubs. Establishments licensed as bars and restaurants are required to operate without causing noise disturbances and must strictly observe the stipulated operating hours, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Noise Pollution Laws
The Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Act, 2021 provides for the control of public nuisance within the County.
Further, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) will closely work with the County Government to ensure a reduction of noise pollution.
Any person found causing noise pollution that causes discomfort or a lack of peace near residential areas or public places shall face legal charges.
Additionally, noise pollution causes health effects such as impairing the cognitive functioning of children and affecting people’s sleep.
