London Estate, a neighborhood in Nakuru, has recently been in the news due to protests that erupted after Daniel Nderitu was fatally shot by police on June 9, 2025, during an operation in the area.
But beyond the protests, the uniqueness of the area’s name, London, has left many curious about why it was named after such a popular city.
Historical Context
Nakuru, established as a township on January 28, 1904, has a history intertwined with colonial and post-independence developments.
As part of the White Highlands, the region saw significant colonial influence, with land divisions shaping early settlements.
Among its diverse neighborhoods, London Estate stands out.
Two explanations have been advanced to explain the origin of the name Nakuru in London. One old explanation holds that a white man from the UK who lived around Hilton and Guba nicknamed the neigborhood ‘London’.
But other proponents say London Estate’s name is deeply tied to its topography. Perched on an elevated ridge approximately three kilometers from Nakuru’s Central Business District (CBD), the estate commands sweeping views of the city and the sparkling Lake Nakuru, famous for its flamingoes.
The young people living in the area dubbed it “London” due to this elevated vantage point, drawing a parallel to the British capital’s prominence.

This geographical feature not only defines the estate’s identity but also enhances its appeal as a residential area, offering residents a sense of openness and connection to Nakuru’s natural beauty.
The estate is divided into Lower London and Upper London, with Upper London sitting at a higher elevation, reinforcing the topographical significance of its name.
The elevated terrain, coupled with well-tarmacked roads upgraded through World Bank support, makes the estate accessible yet distinct, a place where residents can gaze over the bustling city below.
The geographical prominence of London Estate follows a trend of a common naming practice in Kenya, where locations are named based on shared characteristics with famous places, such as elevation or scenic beauty.
London Estate Community
Today, the estate is a thriving lower-middle-class neighborhood, home to small businessmen, civil servants, and students, particularly from nearby institutions like Egerton University and Moi Kabarak University.
Its affordability is a major attraction, with rental prices ranging from Ksh5,000–7,000 for bedsitters, Ksh6,000–10,000 for one-bedroom houses, and Ksh10,000–15,000 for two-bedroom houses.
Local businesses, including shops and small enterprises, cater to daily needs, with the numerous primary schools offering education.
London Estate’s geographical position places it in a strategic spot off Nakuru-Kabarnet Road, surrounded by notable landmarks.

Its elevated position offers respite from the city’s hustle, though challenges like overcrowding and environmental concerns from nearby industrial areas persist.
However, challenges such as high crime rates and the presence of drinking dens, contrast with the estate’s striking name and setting.
Nakuru’s ongoing development, including infrastructure improvements, bodes well for the estate’s future, potentially enhancing its amenities and livability.
