The Standard Group PLC has appointed Chaacha Mwita as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director of the Board.
In a notice signed by Millicent Ngetich, the company secretary, Standard Group’s board stated that the appointment is in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 10 of the Thirteenth Schedule of the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listings and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023.
Chaacha’s appointment took effect from July 1, 2025.
“The Board of Directors of The Standard Group PLC wishes to notify its shareholders and the public of the appointment of Chaacha Mwita as Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of the company, effective 1 July 2025. He has also been appointed an Executive Director of the board,” the notice reads in part.
Chaacha’s appointment follows the resignation of Marion Gathoga Mwangi as the company’s CEO, effective June 30, 2025.
Gathoga had led the company since July 2024.
The board said Gathoga resigned to pursue other career interests.
“The Board takes this opportunity to thank Gathoga for her invaluable service and leadership and wishes her success in her future pursuits,” the board said.
Standard Group Explains Chaacha’s Suitability
Chaacha has over 20 years of extensive local and international experience in leadership, communication, and policy engagement.
The board stated that Chaacha has a strong background in journalism, with significant contributions to improving editorial capacity in newsrooms across Africa.
He has been focusing on media sustainability, choosing business models, and specialization.
His professional background includes conducting comprehensive media assessments in several African countries, including Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda.
His leadership roles have included positions at reputable organisations such as the Standard Group PLC – where he has previously served as Editorial Director and more recently on the board – as well as the Nation Media Group, Aga Khan Foundation, African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), and Thomson Foundation (London, UK).

International Roles
Chaacha has made notable contributions to international panels such as the Africa Means Business Advisory Panel under Thomson Foundation (UK).
He worked closely with esteemed institutions like Oxford University’s Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE), the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Strathmore Business School (SBS), and the University of Ghana (Accra).
“We believe Chaacha’s distinguished achievements as a journalist and media leader will bring value to the organisation as it seeks to revitalise its journalism, maintaining its principles of boldness and independence,” the board added.

Educational Background
Chaacha holds a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree and a postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi (UoN).
He also has an MBA from the University of St Gallen, Switzerland.
Additionally, Chaacha has participated in executive development programmes at the Haas School of Business (University of California at Berkeley, USA) and the University of Luxembourg.
