Joyce Korir Chepkoech is a Kenyan politician and is a Nominated Senator representing women’s interests under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Early Life & Education

Joyce Korir Chepkoech was born in 1981 in Bomet County, Kenya.

She began her formal education at Tendwet Primary School in Bomet, where she studied from 1987 to 1995 and successfully completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.

Following this, she enrolled at Mugango Secondary School in 1996, where she pursued her secondary studies and sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1999.

After completing high school, Joyce developed an interest in public service and governance. In 2004, she joined the Kenya Institute of Legal Studies, where she earned a Certificate in Legal Studies.

A decade later, in 2014, she advanced her education by enrolling at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where she obtained a Diploma in County Governance.

Her passion for leadership and effective communication led her to pursue higher studies at Moi University in 2018, where she undertook a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Public Relations and successfully completed the degree program in 2022.

Career

Professional and Political Career

Joyce Chepkoech Korir began her professional journey in public service shortly after completing her certificate in legal studies.

Her first significant role was in 2007, when she was elected as a Councilor for Singorwet Ward in the then Bomet Municipal Council. Her leadership skills and commitment to community development quickly became evident, earning her the position of Deputy Mayor in 2009.

In 2011, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female Mayor of Bomet Municipality, a position she held until 2013.

Following the introduction of Kenya’s devolved government system in 2013, Joyce transitioned to the newly established Bomet County Assembly, where she was elected Deputy Speaker while continuing to represent Singorwet Ward.

Between 2013 and 2017, she played a critical role in strengthening county governance structures, guiding legislative processes, and advocating for the implementation of policies that improved service delivery in the county.

Joyce pursued further education to enhance her professional capabilities, and in 2014, while serving as Deputy Speaker, she completed a Diploma in County Governance at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), equipping herself with specialized knowledge in devolved systems and administrative management.

In the 2017 General Election, Joyce elevated her political ambitions to the national stage by contesting and winning the position of Woman Representative for Bomet County under the Jubilee Party.

During her five-year term in Kenya’s 12th Parliament, she served on several parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Labour and Social Welfare and the Committee on Delegated Legislation.

Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Joyce joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

She was placed on the party’s nomination list and, following the election, was nominated to the Senate to represent women and marginalized groups.

In November 2022, Joyce Korir was elected Vice-Chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), one of Parliament’s most influential oversight bodies.

She also serves as a member of the Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration and the Committee on Delegated Legislation, where she plays a pivotal role in reviewing bills and delegated regulations.

Joyce has been active in law-making and policy development, sponsoring key legislative proposals, including the County Library Services Bill (Senate Bill No. 40 of 2024), aimed at improving access to educational resources and information services in all counties.
