The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced dates for by-elections and returning officers for the upcoming by-elections.
By-Elections will be held in Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, Samburu West in Samburu County, and Endo Ward in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The elections in the counties are held after the positions were declared vacant by IEBC following the death of the leaders, including Johana Nge’no, who died in a Helicopter crash on February 28
IEBC Gazettes By-Election Dates
In a Gazette Notice No. 3392 dated 13th March 2026, IEBC has stated that the by-elections are scheduled to be held on Thursday, 14th May 2026.

The commission has also named returning officers and deputies ahead of the by-elections.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by Articles 88 (4), 177 (1) (a) 193 and 194 (1) (a) of the Constitution, section 11 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011, Sections 38, 39(1) and (1A) of the Elections Act, 2011 and Regulations 3 of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission appoints the Returning and Deputy Returning Officers named in the 8th and 9th Columns of the Schedule for purposes of conducting the by-elections scheduled to be held on Thursday, 14th May 2026,” the Notice Read.
The IEBC confirmed that the following areas will hold by-elections simultaneously on Thursday, 14th May 2026.
- Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County – National Assembly seat
- Samburu West Constituency, Samburu County – Porro Ward, County Assembly
- Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo/Marakwet County – Endo Ward, County Assembly
In Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County, the by-election follows the death of Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon, who died on February 28 in a fatal plane crash in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Constituency, Nandi County.
In Samburu West Constituency, Samburu County, the vacancy arose following the death of Porro Ward Member of County Assembly Patrick Leerte, who passed away at the Samburu County Referral Hospital.
Meanwhile, in Endo Ward, Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, the by-election is being held to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of Jeremiah Kibiwott Toryebe , who died on January 9, 2026, while undergoing treatment in Nairobi.

Returning and Deputy Returning Officers
The IEBC has appointed Returning Officers (ROs) and Deputy Returning Officers (DROs) for the by-elections.
Their role is to manage polling stations, oversee voting, and verify results in accordance with the law.
The appointments are guided by Articles 88(4), 177(1)(a), 193, and 194(1)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya, the IEBC Act, 2011, and the Elections Act, 2011.
