The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the overseas benefits that teachers will receive during their treatment.
According to the TSC accreditation under SHA, each employee will be entitled to KSH 2.2 million for overseas treatment.
Under the travel insurance, emergency cover will be provided to any member who is out of the country for a period not exceeding 6 weeks.
TSC Unveils New Overseas Treatment Benefits for Teachers
The Commission has revealed that teachers will receive medical cover for treatment costs arising from a condition that warrants treatment that is not available in Kenya.
The cover will include treatment costs for the patient and organ donor, where applicable.
Additionally, the cover will also cover the cost of travel and accommodation for the patient and the one accompanying them.
However, the cost of travel and accommodation for medical personnel accompanying a patient, as recommended by the referring doctor, will be covered for a period not exceeding two days.

These benefits result from the commission migrating more than 300,000 teachers from the Minet-led medical cover to the new SHA.
Despite the teachers’ union demanding transparency from the TSC over the planned shift, the commission has come under growing pressure to provide clarity on the issue.
Other Benefits for Teachers According to TSC
According to the TSC, teachers are set to enjoy the following benefits: principal member, declared spouse, and declared children.
The children, however, must be aged up to 21 years, be wholly dependent on the principal member, and be enrolled in post-secondary education. Children with disabilities who wholly depend on the principal member are not affected by the age limit.
The cover will also include maternity and reproductive health, including antenatal care, delivery by both normal and cesarean section, postnatal care, family planning services, surgical packages, and organ donor testing.

On the organ donor testing, SHA will cover the pre-test costs for the kidney donor identification for a period of 2 years, while the surgical packages include all the surgical procedures, including transplants, except for cosmetic surgeries.
Conditions Guiding Eligibility for Teachers’ Benefits
According to the TSC commission, the following conditions will apply to teachers to be eligible for the benefits:
- Benefits will not cover teachers who seek treatment at non -non-contracted facilities or unauthorized referrals to maintain cost control.
- Treatment by chiropractors or herbalists, as these are outside the scheme’s scope,
- Self-proclaimed services, treatments, or commodities to prevent misuse,
- Expenses for non-conventional therapies, including weight management drugs, nutritional supplements, stop-smoking aids, or domestic remedies, unless prescribed as part of medical treatment,
- Cost from clinical trials or research environments to focus on proven treatments.
