President William Ruto has responded to calls to end the Affordable Housing Program.
While addressing a gathering in Limuru on Sunday, August 10, 2025, where he was inspecting houses constructed under the program, Ruto dismissed the opposition, stating that he would not be deterred from pursuing his vision.
“I have heard some people saying they will come to stop the Affordable Housing Program. I want to ask them—this person without a political stance (Kalonzo) who claims he will stop a program that is employing 600,000 young people and has allowed us to invest 30 billion shillings here in Kiambu—can that be considered a person with vision?” Ruto asked, visibly angry.
Additionally, Ruto described those opposing the Affordable Housing Program as individuals with no viable plans to offer the country.
Ruto Vows to Continue with Affordable Housing Program
He also stated that he would not be intimidated by those calling him a “wantam” president, asserting that his team is composed of intelligent people.
“I am telling those guys not to threaten us with this “wantam” issue. They should not intimidate us with blackmail over “wantam.” We are people who are very intelligent my friend,” the President stated.

Ruto further called on his opponents to provide alternative solutions instead of spending their time criticizing his policies.
“If they have no plan, they should look for another country and citizens to deceive. Don’t blackmail us, don’t threaten us; we have a plan, we have a program, and we are transforming Kenya because we have an agenda for our nation,” he added.
Opposition Leaders Call for the Abolishment of the Program
Ruto’s response comes after several opposition leaders, led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have consistently stated that if Kenyans elect them in 2027, they will abolish the Affordable Housing Program.
Gachagua has called the government’s housing initiative a hoax that pretends to create jobs for young people in Kenya. He has been arguing that it mostly helps a few big companies that supply construction materials.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also called for the scrapping of the Affordable Housing Program, describing it as a “scam.”
He urged President Ruto to abandon it, arguing that it has failed to deliver on its promises of providing affordable housing for Kenyans. Kalonzo made these remarks while speaking in Kitui on August 7, 2025, emphasizing that the program has been controversial and faced public backlash over issues such as the Housing Levy, which many Kenyans view as an additional tax burden.
