The Kenyan government has stipulated key procedures for changing particulars on the national Identification card (ID).
This process is necessary to ensure that your identity documents reflect your current legal and personal information.
Accurate identity details are crucial for accessing government services, banking, travel documentation, employment, and civic rights such as voter registration.
Without proper updates, individuals can face unnecessary delays or exclusions from essential services.
Changes that Can Be Made on ID
Kenyan citizens with an existing National ID card are allowed to apply for updates to their identity particulars when certain life events or changes occur. They include:
- Change of name due to marriage
- Change of location or place of residence
- Addition or removal of a name
- Changing the Order of Names
This service ensures that your official records are up to date and legally recognized.

The changes are not automatic and must be applied for in person through designated government channels.
Required Documents for updating Particulars
To apply for a change of particulars on your ID card, one is required to have several documents according to the set procedure by the government, which are usually used to prove legitimacy.
Documents required depend on the type of change being requested
- Marriage Certificate – for updating your name after marriage
- Deed Poll – for formal name changes not related to marriage
- School Leaving Certificates – to help support name verification
- Sworn Affidavits – for changes like the addition of names
- Confirmation Letters from the Administrative Office – usually from the local chief
- Birth Certificate – to verify date and place of birth
- Copy of Parents’ ID Cards – in cases where parental information is needed
- Parental Consent to Marriage or Change – for specific situations
- Divorce Certificate – if reverting to a former name after divorce
These documents help authorities confirm that your new details are legally sound and correct before updating national records and issuing a new ID card.
Step-by-Step Process of Application
The process is done in a Huduma center and later Biometric verification at National Registration Offices

- Visit the Huduma Centre
Attend your appointment at your nearest Huduma Centre with all original documents and copies.
At the center, you will submit your documents and complete any required application forms that will be issued.
- Verification and Biometric Capture
Government officers will verify your documents and may capture updated biometric details, including fingerprint and passport at the National Registration offices.
Once your application is completed, it will be processed by the National Registration Bureau.
You will be issued a waiting card, which serves as temporary proof of application while your new ID is being prepared.
After processing, you will be notified to collect your updated ID card. This typically involves presenting your waiting card and any identification given during submission.
As per the Huduma Kenya service listing, the standard processing timeline for changes of particulars is approximately 10 days.
The fee for the process is usually Ksh 1000, but with recent government reforms, a waiver was issued by the Ministry of Interior through a Gazette notice published on Friday, October 31, and will provide the fee exemption for six months.
