Multiple impeachment and censure motions have been tabled against Meru County Executive Committee (CEC) members by Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) ahead of a High Court ruling on the impeachment case of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Eight Meru CEC members and the County Secretary, Dr. Kiambi Atheru, are now at risk of impeachment after notices were issued on Thursday, March 13.
Nominated MCAs Kiriinya Mwenda and Zipporah Kinya filed motions to impeach the County Secretary and the Legal and Public Service CECM, respectively.
Meanwhile, the County Assembly whips submitted motions to impeach the Roads and Finance CEC member, while Mikinduri MCA Miriti Kaimbo issued a notice seeking the removal of the Youth Affairs & Sports CEC member.
Water, Education and Trade executives have been targeted under censure motions.
Meru County MCAs, while tabling the motions, cited gross misconduct, abuse of office and incompetence as grounds for their actions.
Other accusations include failure to attend County Assembly sessions and addressing critical issues within their ministries, raising concerns and questions among residents about the county’s performance.

Igembe East MCA, Murithi Mutiiria, also filed a motion to impeach Health CEC member Dr. George Gikunda Mungania.
In his motion, the Deputy Minority Leader cited two grounds: gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, as well as abuse of office.
The tabling of these motions comes ahead of Friday’s High Court ruling on the impeachment case of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
In December 2024, the High Court extended orders blocking the Senate’s decision to impeach the embattled Governor.

High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye ruled that Mwangaza’s application had met the threshold required for the extension of the orders.
“The respondent’s notice of motion is dismissed, ex-party orders are confirmed and extended for a period of 120 days and at that time she will continue to serve as the Governor,” Justice Mwamuye ruled.

Mwangaza unsuccessfully faced her third impeachment on August 21 after a contentious late-night voting session at the Senate confirmed all three charges against the Governor.
On the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, the Senate found Mwangaza guilty, with 26 Senators voting to confirm the charge, 4 voting against it, while 14 abstained.
The second charge followed a similar pattern, with 26 Senators voting in favor, 2 opposing, and 14 abstaining.
