British military intelligence has revealed that an Iranian drone, which struck RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, contained Russian technology. The attack caused minor runway damage but no casualties. The drone, a Shahed model designed in Iran, was reportedly launched by Hezbollah operatives from Lebanon rather than directly from Iran.
Social media erupted after reports emerged suggesting Russia may be secretly involved in the US‑Iran war, with evidence that an Iranian drone that struck Cyprus contained Russian‑made navigation technology, a discovery that has sparked concerns Moscow could be aiding Tehran’s operations in the conflict.
Analysis of the wreckage showed a Russian-made Kometa-B navigation system, previously seen in drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses in December. Components recovered from the drone have been sent to a UK laboratory for further investigation, marking the first confirmed instance of Russian military equipment being used in the Iran conflict.
US President Downplays Russian Involvement
Despite the discovery, US President Donald Trump said he had received “no indication” that Russia is assisting Iran. “If they are, they’re not doing a very good job, because Iran is not doing too well,” he added.

However, intelligence sources indicate that Russia has been providing Tehran with information on the locations of US military assets, including warships and aircraft in the Middle East. Three officials described the support as a “pretty comprehensive effort” to help Iran target American forces.
Moscow Admits Support for Iran
Russia’s position has been clarified by Ambassador Andrey Kelin, who told Sky News that Moscow is “supportive to Iran” and “not neutral” in the conflict. UK Chief of Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton confirmed suspicions of Russian intelligence sharing with Iran, emphasizing that the drone attack on RAF Akrotiri was launched by an “Iranian-aligned group” from Lebanon.
The strikes have raised concerns about British military assets in the region. Two Wildcat helicopters recently arrived in Cyprus, and the UK had been preparing to deploy HMS Prince of Wales, one of its £3 billion aircraft carriers. The warship, carrying F-35 fighter jets, was undergoing maintenance in Portsmouth. While the Ministry of Defence is increasing the carrier’s readiness, no final decision has been made on its deployment.
Sir Keir Starmer Faces Criticism
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has come under scrutiny for delays in allowing US forces to use UK bases. Critics argue Cyprus sought military support from France, Italy, and Spain due to the UK’s slow response.
Starmer initially withheld permission for US operations, citing legal concerns, but later allowed strikes on Iranian missile launchers and stockpiles from RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch accused the Prime Minister of being “too scared to make foreign interventions,” insisting the UK is already part of the war. Starmer defended his cautious approach, saying the country needs “seriousness, not political games” during international crises.
The US has strengthened its presence in the Middle East with B-1 Lancer bombers, RAF Typhoon and F-35 jets, and surveillance helicopters. Trump suggested that ground troops could be deployed to Iran if there is “a very good reason,” but emphasized that Iranian forces would be decisively defeated if this occurred.
Ukraine Confirms Russian Arms Flow
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Iran is receiving arms from Russia. “All of this is found in the fragments of the Shaheds striking the Middle East today. Iranian Shaheds contain Russian-made components. This is something we know for certain,” he said.
The discovery of Russian technology in Iranian drones highlights Moscow’s indirect involvement in escalating tensions between the US, UK, and Iran. Analysts warn that intelligence-sharing could further destabilize the region, exposing allied forces to new threats while complicating diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict.
