Several Americans were left in shock after Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a prominent Democrat, publicly supported President Donald Trump’s coordinated U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran.
In an interview conducted shortly after the attacks on March 1, Fetterman revealed that he might be the only left-leaning senator supporting Trump’s actions and opposed to the Iranian war powers legislation to be debated in Congress.
Major attacks came on the second day following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials warned that tensions had sharply escalated after the airstrikes, with one official telling CNN that Trump had crossed a “very dangerous red line.”
Israel announced a new wave of airstrikes “in the heart of” Tehran, while Iran launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. military bases, Israel, and other regional targets. The fighting has damaged major air hubs, disrupted densely populated areas, and affected oil shipments, raising concerns about broader economic and security implications.

Public reaction has been deeply divided. In Iran, scenes of mourning and celebration highlighted internal splits. In the U.S., demonstrations erupted in multiple cities, with some Americans supporting the strikes and others protesting further military escalation.
Trump posted on social media that Khamenei’s death was “justice,” and said the U.S. would continue bombing “as long as necessary” to secure peace in the Middle East. Hours after announcing the operation, Trump also posted a direct warning to Tehran, saying Iran must not retaliate or “we will hit them with a force that has never been seen before.”
Fetterman reacted to the events on Fox News, describing Khamenei as “one of the most evil people that ever lived” and questioning why Americans were not celebrating his death. He praised the U.S.-Israeli operation as a “win” and suggested he could oppose Democratic efforts to restrict presidential authority over military action.

The offensive, code-named Operation Epic Fury, targeted more than 500 sites across Iran, including missile bases, air defenses, and leadership compounds. The Trump administration framed the operation as necessary to neutralize threats to American and allied security. Trump called Khamenei’s death “justice” on social media and warned Tehran that any retaliation would be met with unprecedented force.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases and regional partners, including Gulf states, prompting fears of further escalation. The conflict disrupted air traffic, strained global oil markets, and led to emergency United Nations sessions calling for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations.
The strikes and their fallout have sparked intense debate in the U.S. Republican leaders largely support Trump’s actions as a defense of national security, while Democrats emphasize the need for congressional authorization. Fetterman’s stance represents a rare divergence within his party, highlighting the constitutional and strategic dilemmas facing lawmakers as the situation in Iran continues to evolve.
