A Senator from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has been forced to swear that she did not receive Ksh10 million during the impeachment of former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua.
In an interview on Monday, August 18, UDA Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda said none of her known close colleagues received the alleged amount.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu alleged that each Senator who voted in favour of Gachagua’s impeachment was paid Ksh10 million from the government.
During Gachagua’s impeachment, every Senator was paid at least Ksh10 million. It came from the government, and the President is the one who gave this money.
However, Mutinda dismissed the allegations, stating that she does not know any Senator who received the said amount.
She accused Nyutu of still being frustrated by Gachagua’s impeachment and asked him to move on.
“I did not receive any communication that there was a reward. I understand that the Senator is still frustrated,” she said.
Mutinda Swears
However, Nyutu asked her colleague to swear that she never received Ksh10 million for the impeachment motion.
“The issue of bribery and Ksh10 million, Senator Tabitha says I am frustrated and disappointed, with what? Let us swear before God that she did not receive Ksh10 million,” he said.
Mutinda agreed to swear and asked Nyutu to bring a Bible to confirm she was telling the truth.
Bring, I did not receive anything to impeach Gachagua. These are frustrations, and we can’t help him. Just manage your frustrations, Kenyans, move forward.
MPs Asking for Bribe
The leaders were debating about President Ruto’s revelation that some legislators have been demanding bribes from the executive, governors, and ministers.
Nyutu affirmed that the focus should be on both those offering the bribe and people receiving it.
“When we are talking about a bribe, we must deal with the giver and the receiver,” he said.
It is not the first time I have heard him lament about this. No such token was issued to me and my colleagues.

On the other hand, Mutinda said Ruto’s revelation is a wake-up call and represents the position of Kenyans.
He stated that legislators should be concerned about Ruto’s words since he is privy to intelligence.
Mutinda said it’s okay to speak up when something is wrong and supported Ruto’s accountability and transparency.
“What the President said is a representation of what the Kenyans feel about some of our public institutions, including Parliament, having integrity concerns. He is right that there is a need to be accountability and transparency. A leader in his capacity has access to a lot of information. I would not be surprised when he brings this out. When he talked about Parliament, we as members need to be concerned,” she said.

How UDA Leaders Distributed the Money
In his claims, Nyutu said the money was sent from the government and distributed to Senators through the House leadership.
He stated that Senators who supported the motion called him stupid for rejecting Khs10million and continuing to stand with Gachagua.
“There is a way the Senate operates. We have a Majority Leader, Whip, and their deputies. That money was coming through leadership. I cannot provide evidence here, but it was there. Most of them told me I am stupid because I refused the Ksh10 million for the sake of Gachagua,” he said.
“This is true, and I say it before God. No Senator who voted Yes received less than Ksh10 million from the government.”
