Mitchelle Joyce Akoth Oruko, popularly known as Mjaka Mfine, is a Kenyan content creator, actress, and comedian whose work centres on comedy and relatable everyday experiences.
Before becoming known for viral TikTok videos, Mjaka was already performing as an actress, including taking part in set-book performances and live stage productions.
Mjaka Mfine has built her audience through short videos on relationships, youth experiences, Kenyan social life, and everyday situations.
Her performances also incorporate humour, characters and different styles of speech, including Kiswahili, Sheng and Dholuo.
Mjaka Mfine: Early Life in Nairobi
Mjaka Mfine was born in Umoja, Nairobi, and grew up in the city’s Eastlands.
She said her family later moved to Kayole Junction in Obama Estate, although she has also previously said she spent part of her childhood in Saika, where she attended school.
Speaking on the YouTube show in November 2025, Mjaka recalled that her father wanted her to pursue a more conventional career and hoped she would become a lawyer.

She wanted to become a musician, but she also developed an interest in acting and performance.
“I was born in Umoja but grew up in Kayole Junction, Obama Estate. I started playing basketball. My dad was like, ‘Basketball is for men; focus on things that girls do.’ My dad wanted me to be a lawyer. I wanted to be a musician, you know, I can sing. But my dad refused that too,” stated Mjaka Mfine.
She has said her father was initially opposed to some of her interests, including basketball, which he considered a boys’ sport.
At one point, her father moved her to another school after becoming concerned about the direction she was taking.
Education
Mjaka completed her secondary education before pursuing further studies at Kenyatta University.
In 2024, when she was 21, she said she had completed high school two years earlier and was pursuing her studies while also working as a performer.
Long before her TikTok following grew, Mjaka was working as a performer.
Mjaka Mfine described herself as a thespian, set-book performer and live stage performer associated with Mabingwa Stage Production.
Her work involved performing set books for school audiences and taking part in live stage productions.
For Mjaka, acting was not simply a hobby. She described it as part of how she earned a living.
Mjaka began creating digital content around 2020, moving from stage performance into online entertainment.
The KSh50 Matatu Incident that Changed Her Profile
Mjaka’s breakthrough came in 2024 after a video of her demanding KSh50 change from a matatu conductor went viral.
She was travelling from Alsops to Kayole Junction when she repeatedly asked the conductor for the balance.
The exchange was captured on video and spread online, with many viewers drawn to her animated reaction and the way she insisted on getting her money.
Mjaka later explained that she was genuinely angry during the incident because the conductor had not returned her change despite repeatedly promising to do so.
Mjaka Mfine said the incident nevertheless became an unexpected turning point in her career.
She began collaborating with other Kenyan content creators, expanding her reach beyond her individual videos.
One of her most visible collaborations is with comedian and content creator Mokaya, where the two have appeared together in numerous videos,
Reaching One Million TikTok Followers
On January 31, she celebrated reaching one million followers on TikTok and 600,000 followers on Instagram.

She shared the milestone with her followers through her Instagram Stories, thanking them for supporting her journey.
Recently, in an interview with media personality Alex Mwakideu, she said her content-creation earnings ranged from KSh300,000 to KSh350,000 a month.
She also made clear that her income is not consistent, identifying July and August as difficult months.
Mjaka has also moved into commercial content and brand partnerships, working with SportPesa Kenya.
She has also spoken about the challenges creators face when working with brands, including production costs and delays in receiving payments.
In one experience she discussed, she said she spent KSh50,000 of her own money producing material for a brand campaign after receiving a down payment, only for the work to be repeatedly rejected.
