WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has announced a series of updates aimed at improving its video and audio calling capabilities.
The new features, set to roll out over the next few weeks, are designed to enhance the overall meeting experience for users across desktop and mobile devices.
“Since we brought Calling to WhatsApp back in 2015, we’ve continued to improve it with the introduction of group calls, video calls, and multi-platform support.”
“Today we have several updates that will make calls across your devices even bigger and better, rolling out over the next few weeks,” said WhatsApp in blog post on Wednesday June 13.
One of the key updates is the ability to share screens while simultaneously sharing audio.

Screen Sharing with Audio
This feature is particularly useful for activities such as watching videos together, as it allows participants to see the content and hear the audio simultaneously.
“Ideal for watching videos together, now when you share your screen, you can share your audio too,” said WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has also increased the maximum number of participants in a video call, now allowing up to 32 people to join across all devices.
This expansion of the group call capacity caters to the growing need for more inclusive and collaborative virtual meetings.
WhatsApp Introduces the “Speaker Spotlight” Feature
Another notable improvement is the introduction of the “Speaker Spotlight” feature.
This automatically highlights the person who is currently speaking, making it easier for participants to follow the conversation and identify the active speaker.
In addition to these new features, WhatsApp has also focused on enhancing the overall audio and video quality of its calls.
“We also remain relentlessly focused on audio and video quality, for clearer calls no matter where you are,” noted WhatsApp.
The platform has launched the MLow codec, which improves call reliability and provides clearer audio, even in poor network conditions or when using older devices.
Improved Quality of Calls
Furthermore, the company has implemented advanced noise and echo cancellation techniques, making it easier to have calls in noisy environments.
Video calls have also received a boost in resolution for users with faster internet connections.
“Calls made on mobile devices benefit from improved noise and echo cancellation, making it easier to have calls in noisy environments, and video calls have higher resolution for those with faster connections.”
WhatsApp Commitment to Enhanced Meeting Experience
Additionally, the company reiterated its commitment to delivering a seamless and high-quality calling experience for its users, whether they are connecting on desktop or mobile devices.
