Kenya is bracing for above-average rainfall during the October to December season, with El Niño conditions expected to increase the risk of flooding and property damage, including to vehicles.
Strong El Niño conditions are likely to persist into early 2027, with several counties placed on high alert.
In March, National Police Service (NPS) statistics showed that at least 71 vehicles were stranded in Nairobi after rising floodwaters made several major roads impassable, leaving motorists stuck and disrupting movement across the city.
As the country braces for another potentially disruptive rainy season, vehicle owners should secure motor insurance to protect against losses from accidents, theft, and damage.
But how can motorists best protect themselves and their vehicles?
Given the risks of flooding, motorists need broader protection than basic or liability-only options.
Specifically, vehicle owners should look for coverage for damage or loss to their own vehicle from non-collision events.
Britam offers comprehensive motor insurance covering accidental damage.

About Britam Comprehensive Cover
Comprehensive motor insurance protects motorists against a range of risks, including accidental damage or overturning, fire, theft, malicious damage, and third-party liabilities.
The cover also provides additional benefits such as free windscreen protection, cover for audio and video accessories, spare wheel, jack and toolbox, as well as recovery and towing following an accident.
Policyholders can also enjoy a non-claim discount of up to 60 per cent depending on the number of years without making a claim, fleet discounts, flexible premium rates and terms, and cover for vehicles while in the custody of a motor trader or garage.
In the event of theft, the policy provides compensation subject to the applicable excess, and it also covers accidental fire and vehicle damage.
Where repair costs exceed 50 per cent of the insured value, the vehicle may be treated as a total loss and compensated accordingly.
The policy also covers third-party liabilities arising from injury or death and accidental damage to third-party property.
The geographical scope is Kenya, with an option to extend the cover to other East African countries on request.
MotiFlex Tackles Another Problem: Paying for the Cover
For some motorists, the challenge is not understanding the importance of insurance. It is finding the full premium upfront.
Britam’s MotiFlex allows eligible customers to spread comprehensive motor insurance premiums over 12 months through monthly, quarterly or semi-annual instalments.
The product retains comprehensive protection for accidental damage, fire and theft, malicious damage and third-party liabilities.
Britam currently lists an initial payment from Ksh10,000, subject to applicable terms and rates.
That turns insurance from a once-a-year financial hit into an expense you can manage over time.

Third Party Car Insurance
Britam also offers third party motor insurance for motorists who do not require comprehensive cover. It is the most basic form of motor insurance and primarily protects the policyholder against liabilities arising from damage or injuries the insured vehicle causes to third parties.
Under the Third Party Only (TPO) cover, the policy protects the insured against liability for damage to third-party property and injuries caused by the vehicle.
Britam also offers Third Party, Fire and Theft (TP&FT), which provides third-party liability protection while also covering the insured vehicle against loss or damage caused by fire and theft.
However, third-party insurance does not cover damage to the policyholder’s own vehicle or injuries sustained by the policyholder.
