The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will align its coaching pathway with the new Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching convention by January 2025.
In a statement on October 17, FKF said the change aims to streamline coach development from grassroots to elite football, ensuring a more focused, efficient, and progressive system.

FKF explained that the new structure addresses gaps in the current framework, offering clear progression opportunities while aligning with international standards.
“Coaches will now follow a structured and detailed pathway that includes mandatory practice periods and refresher courses to ensure they remain up to date with the latest global trends,” reads the statement in part.

The new structure unveiled by FKF consists of basic and advanced courses that all people interested in becoming coaches must go through.
There are six learning stages; three for basic courses and three advanced courses which must be done procedurally as described below.

FKF New Basic Courses
1.FKF Introductory Certificate & FKF D Diploma
The revamped pathway begins with the FKF Introductory Certificate, designed to equip aspiring coaches with foundational skills for grassroots football.
This is a 60-hour course focusing on basic coaching principles and providing the building blocks for a career in football coaching.
The FKF D Diploma focuses on youth football, which is seen as the backbone of long-term football success. This 80-hour program has been significantly enhanced to prepare coaches working with youth and grassroots teams.

2.CAF D License
The CAF D License is the entry-level course for coaches focused on grassroots and youth football. The 10-day course is followed by a mandatory one-year coaching practice period before coaches can progress to the CAF C License.
3.CAF C License
The CAF C License requires a minimum of two months of coursework, followed by at least a two-year practice period before advancing to the CAF B License.
“This new structure provides a clear, direct progression from youth football coaching to elite, professional management, ensuring that coaches continuously develop their skills and remain at the forefront of the game,” FKF said.

Advanced Courses
4.CAF B License
The CAF B License course runs for a minimum of four months, and coaches must complete a one-year practice period before progressing to the CAF A License.
5.CAF A License
The CAF A License is a high-level coaching. It spans at least six months, with a mandatory three-year practice period before qualifying for the prestigious CAF Pro License.
6.CAF Pro License
The CAF Pro License is the highest level of coaching certification, reserved for elite football coaches. To qualify, coaches must have three years of practice at the CAF A level.
“Regular updates and specialized courses will also be introduced to ensure continuous professional development,” FKF said.
