The 2026 FIFA World Cup ended with a series of new records in goals, attendance and player achievements as the expanded 48-team tournament produced the biggest competition in the history of the game.
Hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the tournament featured 104 matches, making it the largest World Cup since the competition was launched in 1930.
Spain lifted the trophy after beating Argentina in the final, but much of the attention throughout the tournament focused on new milestones achieved by teams and players.
The expanded format contributed to several records being broken, with football’s governing body, FIFA, reporting unprecedented figures for goals scored and match attendance.
FIFA World Cup 2026 Rewrites Football History
The tournament finished with 308 goals scored in 104 matches, surpassing the previous World Cup record of 172 goals set during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The competition also became the first World Cup to feature 48 teams and the first to be jointly hosted by three countries.
Attendance figures also reached new levels.
FIFA reported a total attendance of 6,810,966 across all matches, making the 2026 edition the most attended World Cup in history.

The tournament averaged more than 65,000 spectators per match and recorded an occupancy rate of almost 100 percent.
Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe Set New Marks
Argentina captain Lionel Messi added several records to his World Cup career during the tournament.
He became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup match and later overtook Germany’s Miroslav Klose to become the leading goalscorer in men’s World Cup history.
Messi finished the tournament with a record six World Cup appearances, 32 World Cup matches, 2,490 minutes played and 19 World Cup victories, extending marks he already held before the tournament.
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo also achieved a historic milestone.
The 41-year-old became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments, having found the net in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions.
Ronaldo also joined Messi as one of the few players to be selected for six World Cups.
France captain Kylian Mbappe set several records during the tournament.
He became France’s all-time leading goalscorer after surpassing Olivier Giroud’s previous mark of 57 goals.
Mbappe’s World Cup tally rose to 20 goals, surpassing Just Fontaine’s 13 and making him France’s highest scorer in World Cup history.
He finished the tournament as the Golden Boot winner after scoring 10 goals, the highest tally at World Cup 2026.

England captain Harry Kane also set a new national record.
He became England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with 11 goals, surpassing Gary Lineker’s previous mark of 10.
Kane’s five penalty goals also gave him the record for the most penalties scored by a player in World Cup history.
Teams and Fans Make History
Spain set notable team records on their way to the title.
They became the first team in World Cup history to play six matches without conceding a goal and also became the first European nation to win a World Cup hosted in the Americas.
Spain conceded only one goal throughout the tournament.
The expanded format also allowed more nations to participate and produce historic achievements.
Cape Verde became the smallest country ever to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup, while Curaçao became the smallest nation to appear at the tournament and score a World Cup goal.
Egypt recorded its first World Cup victory during the competition.
Goalkeepers also registered new milestones.
Spain’s Unai Simon established a new World Cup clean-sheet streak record, while Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez set a final record after making 11 saves in the championship match against Spain.
