Thomas Tuchel slammed the performance by Manchester City defender Kyle Walker after another 3-1 loss against Senegal in an international friendly at the City Ground in Nottingham last night.
After the manager’s first loss as the Three Lions boss, Tuchel openly criticized Walker who was at fault for Senegal’s first goal.
Walker was ‘caught napping’, allowing Ismaila Sarr to score, with his overall performance described as ‘lazy’ and ‘off the pace’ by commentating analysts.
“I see the lack of rhythm and misjudgment in duels and anticipation in his game. That is the nature of a player that, to tell the truth, lacks minutes in his legs lately in the past matches,” Tuchel stated in a post-match press conference, referring to Kyle Walker.
England took an early lead through Harry Kane in the seventh minute. But Senegal equalized before halftime through Ismaila Sarr, with further goals from Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly securing a 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
This result ended England’s 22-game unbeaten streak against African teams, their first loss against an African team.

In England’s previous 21 matches against African nations, the Three Lions had won 15 times and drawn six.
The match was met with boos from England fans, reflecting disappointment in the team’s performance, with an applause from the players cut short by the rising sound of the boos.
Kyle Walker Performance
A defensive lapse by Walker, in the 40th minute, was a focal point of criticism in the overall disappointing performance by the England team.
Nicholas Jackson squared the ball into the England defensive box for Sarr to score to give the Senegalese a three-yard head start.
Walker averaged a 3/10 rating according to FIFA match analysis, describing him as often running too narrow with messy spacing while defending.
“With or without the ball, the team wasn’t clicking. We could not connect passes throughout the game. We got punished for not being aggressive enough by a good team and we paid for it. We were just not good today,” England Captain Harry Kane stated after the game.
England for a moment, thought they had sealed a draw in the 83rd minute when Jude Bellingham converted a well-crossed corner from close range before the goal was ruled out for a supposed handball against him.

The match exposed broader challenges for Tuchel’s England team, with defensive solidity and team cohesion under scrutiny.
Senegal Team Hopeful
Senegal’s Coach Pape Thiaw highlighted the team’s resilience, stating, “I would like to congratulate my players who have won this match for their tremendous performance and mindset. We felt we were on top but then they scored a goal. We came back, showed a great mentality, in the second half we were able to impose our game a bit more.”
Senegal’s dominance was evident after finishing the match with 9 shots on target compared to England’s 4, indicating a higher conversion rate and more effective attacking play.
The victory was not just a win but a historic milestone for Senegalese football. The team’s celebration, especially after Sabaly’s late goal, reflected the significance of the achievement.
Coach Thiaw also congratulated the federation for enabling such high-profile matches, calling to all African nations to continue improving football.
