Users on Meta’s messaging and calling service WhatsApp often consider leaving group chats due to constant notifications, off-topic discussions, or simply wanting a quieter digital space.

In the past, exiting a group would automatically send a visible notification to all members, which many users found uncomfortable, especially in professional or family groups.

However, successive WhatsApp privacy updates changed this system. According to WhatsApp, only group admins are notified when a member leaves, meaning everyone else in the group remains unaware.

“When you exit a group, only group admins will be notified of your exit.”

The feature rolled out as part of WhatsApp’s expanded privacy tools, which also included:

  • Choose who can see when you’re online – WhatsApp noted that while online visibility helps people feel connected, users sometimes prefer privacy. This feature allows people to select who can or cannot view their online status.
  • Screenshot blocking for view-once messages – The Meta-owned platform introduced an added layer of protection by preventing screenshots of “View Once” photos and videos, though this feature is still being tested.

These updates were designed to give users more control over their visibility, safety, and interactions.

How to leave a WhatsApp group without notifying members

Only group admins will be notified if you leave a group on WhatsApp. Leaving silently does not require any special settings. Simply exiting the group is enough.

Step-by-step guide to leaving a WhatsApp group silently

For Android

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap the group name at the top.
  3. Select Exit group.
  4. You may see an option to Report group.
  5. Choose one of the following:
    • Exit group – Leave but keep chat history.
    • Exit and delete for me – Leave and delete the chat from your list.

For iOS and WhatsApp Web

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap or click the group name.
  3. Select Exit group.
  4. Choose:
    • Exit group (keeps history)
    • Exit and delete for me (removes chat)

For Windows and Mac

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Click the group name.
  3. Select Exit group > Exit group.
  4. After exiting, you will see the option to delete the group.

What happens after you leave a group?

When one leaves a WhatsApp group and then deletes it, the group disappears from their chat list.

Their name and phone number remain visible in the past members section for up to 60 days, and their profile photo may still appear depending on their privacy settings.

To rejoin, a user must be re-invited by an admin. If the group is part of a WhatsApp Community, leaving it also removes a user from the entire community.

Other updates

Meta Platforms in September 2025 announced the introduction of a translation feature for WhatsApp, aiming to ease cross-language chats among its more than 3 billion users.

“Message translations were designed to protect the privacy of your chats. That’s why translations occur on your device where WhatsApp cannot see them,” Meta said in a blog.

The translations will initially be available in 6 languages on Android devices and 19 on iPhones, with more to follow.
