The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i asked the private sector to stop funding political hopefuls encouraging violence during campaigns.
Speaking on Monday, May 23 during a meeting with Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) the CS stated that intelligence brief show that most political crooks are funded by the private sector.
He further mentioned that, even though the country is secure and relatively stable, funding aspirants with organized gangs are undermining state security efforts.
“We have intelligence showing who is meeting who in the night in the estates in Nairobi and giving out the monies which then are used for bribery in the campaigns. You are in this room and we must tell each other the truth,” Mating’i said.
According to Matiang’i, powerful politicians are blackmailing business players to fund their activities and campaigns, failure to which they will be blocked from operating after the August 9 polls.
In addition, the CS reiterated his concern that the coming elections may get criminals to public offices. He said the polls will see “unprecedented level of voter bribery by ‘wash wash’ fellows.”
“Where do you get the money to give people Sh500 or even Sh1000 each in hotels and restaurants every morning if it’s not from wash wash, money laundering and also funding from the private businesses?” said Matiang’i.
Matiang’i also mentioned that, the country is safer and far better as compared to how it was during this time before the 2017 elections.
