Israeli forces struck a building in Beirut’s Dahiyeh area on Wednesday, killing a senior commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan Force, Israeli officials said.
The Israel Defense Forces identified the target as Malek Balou, a commander in the group’s elite special operations unit. Officials said the Radwan Force has directed attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers near the border.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that he and Defense Minister Israel Katz approved the operation. Netanyahu’s office added that no militant has immunity, regardless of location.
Israeli military sources indicated that Balou’s deputy may also have been present at the site. The strike took place in a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut.
Reports from the area described explosions and smoke rising from the location. Lebanese authorities have not yet issued a full confirmation or casualty count from the strike.
This action follows a series of Israeli operations against Hezbollah leadership earlier in 2026. In April, Israeli forces killed Haj Youssef Ismail Hashem, commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, in a naval strike on Beirut. Other strikes targeted intelligence officials and aides close to Hezbollah’s senior leadership.
Context of Renewed Tensions
The strike occurs against a backdrop of fragile ceasefire arrangements between Israel and Lebanon, brokered in part through U.S. efforts under President Donald Trump.

Trump has described recent border incidents as a “separate skirmish” related to Hezbollah and has called for surgical actions rather than broader escalation.
Israeli officials have cited repeated violations, including rocket and drone activity from Lebanon, as justification for continued targeted operations.
Hezbollah has not released an official statement on Balou’s status as of late Wednesday. The group has previously confirmed losses only after Israeli announcements.
The Radwan Force serves as Hezbollah’s primary unit for potential ground incursions into Israel and has been a focus of Israeli efforts to degrade its capabilities since 2024.
Lebanese media reported activity in the Dahiyeh suburb, a known Hezbollah base. No immediate reports of widespread civilian casualties emerged, though details remain limited in the hours after the strike.

Effect in Hezbollah
The elimination of another Radwan Force commander in Beirut emphasizes Israel’s strategy of disrupting Hezbollah’s command structure deep inside Lebanon. It signals that Israeli operations against the group continue despite diplomatic efforts to stabilize the border.
For Hezbollah, repeated losses of senior field commanders weaken its ability to plan and execute attacks. The strike also tests the limits of current ceasefire understandings, with potential implications for regional stability under the Trump administration’s approach to Middle East security issues.
Further reactions from Lebanese officials, Hezbollah, and the United States are expected in the coming days.
