United States President Donald Trump has said that he thinks it is time for Ukraine to hold an election.
In an interview with Politico on December 9, President Donald Trump stated that it had been a long time since the Ukraine had elections, and it had not been doing exceptionally well.
“Yeah. I think so. It’s been a long time. It hasn’t been doing particularly well,” he said.
He stated that the country has been using war as a reason not to hold the elections, and the people of Ukraine should have that choice.
According to Trump, Zelenskyy “might win,” though he added that he does not know who would ultimately come out on top.
He said that while people talk about Ukraine as a democracy, there comes a point where “it’s no longer a democracy.”
“I don’t know who would win. But they haven’t had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore,” he said.
How Trump May Oust Zelenskyy From Power
During the interview, Trump was asked whether he would walk away from Ukraine’s peace deal, a remark his son, Donald Trump Jr., made on December 7.
The US president said that it is not correct, but Ukraine should remain aware that Russia has always had an upper hand.
“No, it’s not correct. But it’s not exactly wrong. We have to, you know, they have to play ball. If they don’t read agreements, potential agreements, you know, it’s, uh, not easy with Russia because Russia has the upper hand. And they always did,” he said.
He said Zelenskyy had not yet read the peace proposal and insisted that the Ukrainian president must review the document.

On the question of negotiating strength between Ukraine and Russia, Trump said that Russia holds the advantage.
“Well, there can be no question about it. It’s Russia. It’s a much bigger country. It’s a war that should’ve never happened,” Trump added.
He stated that the war between the two countries would not have happened if he had been the president.

US President noted that he stepped in to help with the peace process to prevent the war from escalating into World War III.
“I think it’s probably not gonna be happening now. I think if I weren’t president, you could’ve had World War III. I think you would’ve had a much bigger problem than you have right now, but right now it’s a big problem. It’s a big problem for Europe. And they’re not handling it well.”
He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy are not on talking terms, saying that “they hate each other” and that has made it hard for them to reach a deal.
“They really hate each other. And part of the problem is they hate each other really a lot, you know. And it’s very hard for them to try and make a deal,” he said.
