Career
Professional Career
After completing her studies, Hezena M. Lemaletian began her career in public service, gaining hands-on experience in financial management and government operations.
From 2013 to 2015, while still finalizing her university education, she worked as a Finance Assistant at the Tourism Fund, then known as the Catering and Tourism Development Levy Trustees (CTDLT).
She later joined the Ministry of Environment, Mineral and Natural Resources in the same capacity, serving from 2015 to 2017.
Lemaletian’s work extended beyond government service into advocacy and cultural leadership.
She made history as the first woman from northern Kenya to win the Miss Commonwealth Kenya title, giving her a platform to promote cultural exchange and charitable initiatives internationally.
Through this role, she represented Kenya at global forums, focusing on issues affecting marginalized communities, especially women and youth.
Motivated by the challenges facing her home region, Lemaletian founded the Pastoralists Sports Initiative, an organization that leverages sports to foster peace and economic empowerment among pastoralist communities.
The initiative brings together youth from rival ethnic groups, using sporting events to reduce conflict, encourage dialogue, and promote social cohesion.
It also supports programs aimed at improving education and creating livelihood opportunities.
Her dedication to grassroots empowerment and peacebuilding earned her recognition on the continental stage, receiving the African Leadership Hall of Fame Award and the Exceptional Young African Leaders Award.
Political career
Lemaletian transitioned from advocacy into active politics in 2022, when she was nominated to the Senate under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Her nomination followed the August 2022 General Election, where ODM allocated positions to represent women and youth from marginalized and pastoralist regions.
In the Senate, Lemaletian serves on the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, where she champions policies aimed at improving food security and protecting pastoralist livelihoods.
