A fatal road accident involving an 18-seater matatu and a truck occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Kapiti Plains section of the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

The two vehicles collided head-on, with several people feared dead in the crash.

Photos seen by The Kenya Times showed the 18-seater matatu with extensive damage following the collision.

The vehicle’s front section was heavily crushed, with the bonnet and front body panels severely bent and pushed out of shape.

The photos also showed that the windshield and front windows appeared damaged, while the metal frame around the passenger compartment was visibly distorted.

The left side of the matatu also sustained significant damage, with sections of the bodywork caved in and panels displaced.

A large section of the side body appeared to have been torn or pushed outward, exposing parts of the vehicle’s interior. The roof and upper side section were also visibly deformed.

Where is Kapiti Plains on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway

Kapiti Plains is located along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway in Machakos County. The area lies along the stretch of the highway between Kyumbi and Konza, near the ILRI Kapiti Research Station.

Motorists traveling from Nairobi towards Mombasa pass through Athi River before reaching the Makutano/Kyumbi junction.

From the junction, they continue along the highway towards Konza and Mombasa, with Kapiti Plains situated further along this stretch.

The Kapiti Plains stretch has been identified as a traffic blackspot along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

The relatively straight, flat road section allows vehicles to maintain high speeds, and overtaking increases the risk of head-on collisions.

Kapiti Plains on the Nairobi–Mombasa Hotspot for Accidents?

In July, six people were confirmed dead and several others injured after a public service bus collided with a trailer along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway in Machakos County, in another fatal crash along the busy road.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight near Kapiti, a few kilometers from Konza Technopolis in Athi River Sub-County.

The crash involved three vehicles, including a bus and two trailers, and triggered a major rescue operation as traffic built up along the highway.

Kalama Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Gaitirira said the six victims died at the scene. He said the accident occurred at around 1 am and involved the three vehicles.

“The trailer was coming from Mombasa to Nairobi, and there was a bus heading to Mombasa from Nairobi. When they reached the location of the accident, there was overtaking by one of the trailers. So, as a result, there was a head-on collision between the trailer and the bus,” he said.

At least 38 injured passengers were later taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment, according to a source at the facility.

Police officers from Kyumbi and Muumandu police stations were deployed to the scene to coordinate the rescue operation and manage traffic.

The crash caused significant delays along the highway, with long queues forming as officers worked to clear the scene and direct motorists.
