Agriculture CS Nominee Reveals His Net Worth

The Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominee for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Andrew Karanja has disclosed his net worth.

Speaking when he appeared before the National Assembly Appointments Committee for vetting on Friday August 2, Karanja revealed that his net worth is Ksh 214 million.

“My net worth is Ksh 214,000,000,” Andrew Karanja said.

Karanja said his wealth comes from his residencies, family residencies, apartments, cars, plots, lands and deposit in his bank accounts.

Karanja holds a degree in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi (1984-1987) and a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the same University (1987-1991).

The Agriculture CS nominee also has a PhD in development economics and policy from Wageningen University in the Netherlands (1998-2002).

Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja is an Agricultural Economist at the World Bank with more than 36 years of experience in the public sector, both locally and internationally.

He majors in the fields of development economics, rural development and finance, agriculture and livestock development, project formulation, management and evaluation.

Professional Career of Andrew Karanja

Karanja started his career as an extension officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, before rising through the ranks as a Planning Officer.  

He later joined Coffee Research Foundation (CRF) as a Research Officer/Agricultural Economist where he rose to Senior Agricultural Economist and Head of Economics Department.

During his eleven-year tenure at CRF, he collaborated with the Cocoa Board of Ghana, the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), and the Intra-Africa Coffee Organisation.

At CRF, he participated in various committees, task forces, and commissions that led the coffee industry’s reform in the 1990s. 

In 2002, Andrew Karanja worked as a research fellow at Egerton University and the Tegemeo Policy Research Institute, where he conducted policy research on the liberalization of the dairy industry, among others.

The CS nominee joined the World Bank in 2003, as an Agricultural Economist and later promoted to Senior Agricultural Economist in charge of World Bank rural and agriculture portfolio in Kenya and in the East Africa region.

His duties included the preparation and supervision of World Bank lending operations in the agricultural and environment sectors as a task team leader.

Others comprised of undertaking and supervision of policy analysis on various rural/agricultural issues, coordination activities with other development partners and the Government of Kenya.

Karanja as a Consultant

Before his nomination, Andrew Karanja served as an independent consultant in rural development and agriculture, project evaluation, and impact assessment.

Karanja’s recent consultancies include programs funded by the Kenyan government, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, USAID, the European Union (EU), private sector companies, and NGOs.

He has published over 26 papers and book chapters in both international and local publications and has received several awards and fellowships.
