Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua is missing from the proceedings at Senate regarding his impeachment.
The Senate was in a state after confusion after reports emerged that Gachagua was missing during the afternoon plenary session on Thursday, October 17.

Gachagua’s legal team were forced to cut short their defence and raised their concerns to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.
The DP’s team is led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite requested more time for them to locate the deputy president who was nowhere to be found.

“I’m going to find out where my client is held up.” We saw him enter the building, sir!” he said.
The Senators present at the session asked the speaker to adjourn the proceedings.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale requested Speaker Kingi to suspend the proceedings until Gachagua appears.
Gachagua Admitted to Hospital
Muite apologized for the delays caused by his absence stating that the DP has been punctual while attending the session at the National Assembly and the Senate.
“May I start first and foremost by expressing apologies and regrets that the deputy president is not here thus the inconvenience and delay caused to the speaker and the senate,” he said.
Muite revealed that Gachagua had fallen ill and was admitted to the hospital.
“During that period that period that they went to try and find out why he is not here because as the speaker knows the DP has been coming here punctually,” he said.
“The sad reality is that the DP has been taken very sick and as I speak, he is in the hospital. That is the sad reality.”

Muite Requests for More Time
Muite requested Speaker Kingi to give his team the rest of the day to establish the condition of the deputy president.
“Mr. Speaker, I have just received this information, my proposal is that you give me at least the rest of the day. I would like to go and have an assessment of his situation and maybe even come back here by 5p.m,” he said.
“I would like to make an informed sought of situation after I see the DP and see the doctor. At least an hour or two.”

Court Session Suspended
Kingi has suspended Senate Proceedings till 5 pm due to this development to wait for Gachagua.
“We will suspend this seating and resume at 5pm. We expect the DP to take the witness stand at 5pm. Unfortunately, this is a time bound process,” he said.
The Senate is set to vote on whether to remove DP Gachagua from office by impeachment after the trial against him enters its second and final day.
