Here is the full statement by the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’oei

“We are deeply concerned by the ongoing siege and attacks on Embassy Premises and personnel in Kinshasa, DRC, including the Kenyan, Uganda and South African Embassies, by marauding protesters who are voicing their discontent on the conflict in the Eastern Part of that country.

This development is a serious breach of international law and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible. We call on authorities in DRC to take appropriate action. Kenya stands with the DRC during this challenging time and will use all diplomatic means within its disposal to work with the rest of the region in the search for peace. We implore Kenyan citizens and business people to exercise caution during this period.

What is Happening in DRC and Kenyan Embassy

Goma, located near Rwanda’s border, faces ongoing instability due to conflicts in eastern DRC.

As of Monday, January 27, the M23 rebel group reportedly seized the city after intense clashes, though the government insists it still controls key areas, including the airport.

Videos show M23 fighters patrolling Goma after a swift advance on January 26, forcing mass displacement. While streets are now mostly quiet, uncertainty remains.

The DRC accuses Rwanda of backing M23, a claim Rwanda denies, blaming Kinshasa instead.

Consequently, Key roads are blocked, the airport is inaccessible, and the UN has begun withdrawing non-essential staff amid reports of looting.

Also, Jambojet earlier announced the temporary suspension of flights between Nairobi and Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) stating that the Goma airspace had been closed.

Ruto Calls for an Emergency Meeting

President William Ruto on Monday, January 28, confirmed that DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame will attend an emergency East African Community (EAC) summit on Wednesday, January 29, on the escalating conflict in Eastern DRC.

Speaking at State House during a press briefing on African Union (AU) reforms, Ruto stressed the urgency of the meeting, noting that several other regional leaders had also confirmed their participation.

“This is not just a crisis for Eastern DRC but a regional concern. The situation demands our collective focus. “We must work together to end this cycle of violence that has long impacted our brothers and sisters in the DRC,” he said.

Moreover, the emergency summit aims to address decades of instability in Eastern DRC, which has fueled displacement and humanitarian crises while affecting the wider East African region.

Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to peace-building, emphasizing that a stable Eastern Congo is crucial for regional security and economic growth.
