The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement on the missing Kenyan police officer serving under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti.
In the statement dated March 26, NPS said the officer was reported missing while on duty on March 25, 2025, following an ambush incident along the Carrefour Paye-Savien main supply route in the Pont-Sonde area, Artibonite Department.
NPS stated that MSS in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is actively conducting a search and rescue operation to locate the missing officer.
“We commend the National Police officers in Haiti, who remain committed to fulfilling the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission,” reads part of the statement.
In a statement, MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka said the incident happened at approximately 16:30hrs on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, along the Carrefour Paye-Savien Main Supply Route in the Pont-Sonde area, Artibonite Department.
Ombaka said a HNP armored vehicle on patrol got stuck in a ditch suspected to have been deliberately dug by gangs along the route.
MSS responded by dispatching two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from Pont-Sonde to assist in the recovery.
Unfortunately, during the recovery operation, one of the MRAPs also got stuck, while the other developed a mechanical issue.
The officers were attacked by gang members leading to the disappearance of one Kenyan police officer.
“As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an attack. As a result of the incident, one MSS Kenyan contingent officer remains unaccounted for,” Ombaka said.
He stated that MSS has deployed specialized teams to conduct a search and determine his whereabouts.
Ombaka said the Mission will provide a comprehensive brief about the incident.
