Martha Karua Announces NARC Kenya Exit from Azimio

NARC Kenya Party led by Martha Karua’s has announced its exit from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

This comes following the recent nomination of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party members to President William Ruto’s new Cabinet

In a notice addressed to Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Secretary General, Junet Mohammed, Martha Karau cited the turbulent political atmosphere present in the country at the moment as the reason for the party’s exit.

The party noted that the decision to leave Azimio is effective July 25, 2024, and was in accordance with the exit clause (s) in the Coalition Agreement

“Kindly take note that our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments.” read the letter in part.

“As NARC Kenya by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause (s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter.”

Karua Opposes National Dialogue Talks

Karua, who has been a key figure in the opposition, has in recent weeks been vocal expressing her opposition to a national dialogue and coalition between President William Ruto and Azimio leader, Raila Odinga.

When the proposed talks, aimed at addressing the nation’s issues, were first announced  Karua reacted stating that “dialogue can only be meaningful if the players are in good faith and guided by the best interests of the people.”

“Let’s be careful as the political class lest we hijack the genuine clamor for accountability and reforms by the Gen Z.”

“I agree with those who say Action Now on the clear and attainable demands of the Gen Zs to enhance accountability and make the state work for the masses rather than for a handful elites,” she said.

Karua hints at the Azimio Coalition Break up

Similarly, Karua had earlier hinted at the Azimio la Umoja one Coalition break up while speaking in an interview on July 25.

During the interview  Karua revealed that the Coalition had been unstable ever since the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) tabled its report.

However, Karua pointed out that the nomination of top ODM officials to President William Ruto’s cabinet had marked the end of the Coalition.

“Azimio is shaky, and I think after yesterday it is done. I’m saying shaky because since the NADCO report we have been pulling in different directions.”

“The only thing that saves us is that we decided to build our individual parties at the beginning of this year,” Karua said.

Additionally, she revealed that there will be a meeting between a certain section of the Azimio coalition leaders on Monday, July 29, so as to deliberate and make the final decision following Ruto’s cabinet appointments.

“From where I sit, it is done. We are meeting with a few Azimio leaders on Monday, but as NARC Kenya, we have discussed a few of these things.”

“On Monday, we will talk about this issue of the party, and you will hear from us. You will also hear from our individual parties. We must ask ourselves, is there anything left worth fighting for?” Karua said.
