The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory affecting multiple counties from Friday, October 3 to Sunday, October 5, 2025.
In a statement on October 3, Kenya Met warned that rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify, with amounts exceeding 20mm in 24 hours. The rains are also forecast to spread to the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, and may be accompanied by gusty winds.
The department further projects that the heavy downpours will ease from Monday, October 6. In addition, strong southerly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) will persist over the eastern sector.
“The rainfall being experienced over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and Highlands west of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24 hours and likely to spread to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, on Friday, 3rd October 2025. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue up to Sunday, 5th October 2025 and is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds. It is projected to reduce in intensity from Monday, 6th October 2025,” read the advisory.
Kenya Met Issues Heavy Rainfall Advisory Affecting 34 Counties
Counties likely to be affected include: Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi.
Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert for potential flooding, avoid driving or walking in moving water, and keep away from trees and open fields to minimize risks of lightning strikes. Strong winds may also uproot trees, blow off roofs, and cause structural damage.

Weatherman Warns of Heavy Rainfall
Earlier, Weatherman issued a warning that ongoing rains across the country are expected to intensify. In its forecast, Heavy rainfall is expected in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and Northwestern regions.
Isolated areas may receive between 20mm and 50mm of rain in 24 hours, while some locations could experience very heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm.

Kenya Met cautioned that these intense rains could lead to localized flooding, slippery roads, and potential disruptions to daily activities.
Residents across the country have been advised to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and plan their movements carefully.
“Isolated heavy rainfall of 20mm – 50mm in 24 hours, and in some places very heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in 24 hours, may occur over parts of these regions,” read the weather forecast.
