The Kenyatta family has built a business portfolio spanning agriculture, banking, dairy processing, media, hospitality and real estate.

Among the family’s most prominent property interests are seven luxury hotels and safari camps associated with Heritage Hotels East Africa, as well as Northlands City, a large mixed-use development in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The hospitality properties span the Coast, Maasai Mara, Samburu, Tsavo, Lamu and the Rift Valley, while Northlands covers thousands of acres and is planned as a combination of residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and recreational spaces.

Heritage Hotels, the Kenyatta Family Hospitality Business

The Kenyatta family’s hospitality interests are associated with Heritage Hotels East Africa, which operates seven properties across Kenya.

The portfolio includes Mara Explorer, Mara Intrepids, Samburu Intrepids, Kipungani Explorer, Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort, Voyager Beach Resort and Voyager Ziwani.

The hotels serve different areas of Kenya’s tourism sector, including safari lodges in the Maasai Mara, a beach resort in Mombasa, and a luxury retreat in Lamu.

Muhoho Kenyatta has been a key figure in the family’s hospitality investments and has served as a director at Heritage Hotels, which manages the properties.

Its location gives guests access to the Maasai Mara National Reserve and its wildlife, including the annual wildebeest migration.

The camp is also accessible via the Ol Kiombo airstrip, served by domestic safari airlines.

Mara Intrepids

Mara Intrepids is another luxury safari camp owned by the Kenyatta family and located in the Maasai Mara.

The camp sits close to the Mara River and offers accommodation for visitors undertaking game drives in the reserve.

Samburu Intrepids

Samburu Intrepids is located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve.

The luxury tented camp provides safari accommodation and access to wildlife viewing in the Samburu and neighbouring Buffalo Springs reserves.

Kipungani Explorer

Kipungani Explorer is located on Lamu Island along the Kenyan coast.

The property is a secluded coastal retreat, with accommodation near the beach and mangrove-lined channels.

Activities include water sports, dhow trips, fishing, and visits to historic sites around Lamu and Manda islands.

Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort

Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort is a Kenyatta family-owned property in Naivasha.

The property combines accommodation with an 18-hole golf course and facilities for conferences, meetings and private events. It also includes residential chalets and other accommodation facilities within the wider resort.

The property gives the family’s hospitality portfolio a presence in the Rift Valley outside the traditional coastal and safari destinations.

Voyager Beach Resort

Voyager Beach Resort is located along the Indian Ocean in Nyali, Mombasa.

The resort operates under Heritage Hotels’ Voyager brand and is designed around a ship theme. It offers accommodation, restaurants, swimming pools, water activities and entertainment facilities.

Its coastal location makes it one of the family’s most prominent hospitality properties outside the safari circuit.

Voyager Ziwani

Voyager Ziwani is a Kenyatta family-owned safari camp in the Tsavo region.

The property sits along the Sante River and offers views of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. It provides accommodation and safari activities within the wider Tsavo ecosystem.

Muhoho Kenyatta’s Role

Muhoho Kenyatta, the younger brother of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been involved in the management of the family’s commercial interests.

He has served as a director of Heritage Hotels and other companies associated with the family’s businesses.

The Kenyatta family holds its investments through different companies and corporate structures.

 Northlands City

Beyond hospitality, the Kenyatta family has a major real estate project, Northlands City, in Ruiru.

The development is planned as a large mixed-use city combining residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, agricultural and conservation areas. The project is associated with the family’s Brookside Holdings interests.

The September 2026 master plan allocates 3,750 acres for housing, 695 acres for an industrial park and 390 acres for a business district.

It also provides 1,697 acres for open recreational space and about 5,156 acres for wildlife conservation and agricultural activities. The development is expected to accommodate more than 250,000 people when fully completed.

The plan therefore extends beyond housing, with provisions for business and industrial activity alongside recreation, agriculture and conservation. The wider development also includes plans for supporting infrastructure and public facilities.

Northlands is also connected to Brookside Dairy, one of the family’s major business interests.

Brookside Dairy was founded in 1993 at Sukari Farm in Ruiru and initially processed 5,000 litres of milk daily

The company later expanded its operations and became a major dairy processor in East Africa.

The company says it works with more than 200,000 farmers across 27 counties who supply milk to its operations.
