Festus Omwamba, a man linked to the recruitment of Kenyans to the Russia-Ukraine war, was arrested by detectives from Moyale Police Station near the Kenya–Ethiopia border as he attempted to flee shortly after returning from Russia.

On February 26, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) described him as a wanted human trafficker and a central figure in a syndicate accused of luring up to 1,000 Kenyans with false promises of well‑paying overseas jobs, many of whom were later coerced into fighting on Russia’s frontlines in the Ukraine war.

According to the DCI, “Festus is believed to be a key player in a more extensive human trafficking syndicate that exploits vulnerable individuals by promising them legitimate employment opportunities in European countries.”

Festus Omwamba’s Early Life, Education, and Political Involvement

Omwamba, a 33-year-old Kenyan, maintained a relatively low profile until recent investigations pushed him into the national spotlight.

He previously played a role in the expulsion of then-nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from UDA after filing an internal complaint claiming misconduct and disloyalty.

Orwoba would later be kicked out. Although the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal reinstated her, the High Court upheld her expulsion in October 2025.

Professional Activities and Business Interests

Omwamba owns a recruitment agency based in Nairobi.

It targets jobseekers, including former police and military officers, and connects them with employers in Europe or Russia for civilian jobs.

“However, upon arrival, these unsuspecting victims find themselves trapped in illegal and perilous jobs, stripping them of their dignity and safety.” Read part of the statement by DCI.

The recruitment network coordinates flights, accommodation, and Russian bank accounts through contacts in Moscow.

According to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), at least 1,000 Kenyans have joined the Russian military.

“Our ambassador in Moscow must be able to identify the officers within the embassy that may have colluded with these criminals. Our embassy must be beyond reproach. It must be the place where Kenyans can seek refuge, not exploitation,” stated National Assembly Majority leader Kimani  Ichung’wa.

Several Kenyans have also lost their lives in Russia, with affected families pleading with the government to help them repatriate their bodies.
