Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has explained how the Ministry of Education has planned to ease pressure on students and parents during school placements.
In a media interview on January 1, Bitok said there has been high demand for specific schools, with many parents requesting particular institutions for their children, creating a challenge for the placement process.
“Like now, when you get my phone, you have so many parents saying, we want this particular school. I don’t want to say the name on TV because I’ll be unfair. We want this particular school,” Bitok said.
“We want this particular school. My child is saying he wants this school. That is the thing we’re trying to really eliminate.”

Further, he explained that during the revision, students will not be limited to a single preferred school. If a learner finds that their preferred option is unavailable during the revision, they can choose from the other schools offered.
Students will be offered several options, and if they qualify for a preferred school, they can adjust their selection.
The options provided will be equivalent to each other and match the level of the school a student originally wanted.
Bitok said this approach will allow learners to choose schools that match their pathways, whether in STEM, arts and sports, or social sciences.

School Placement Pressure
According to the Ministry of Education, 355,457 review applications were received, with each learner permitted to submit up to four requests.
Of these, 211,636 learner applications were approved.
The remaining applications were declined mainly due to limited school capacity or the unavailability of preferred subject combinations in the selected institutions.
Popular national schools such as Alliance High School, Kenya High School and Mangu High School each received up to 20,000 applications, despite having an average intake capacity of about 500 learners.
