Sheryl Chepkirui and Beryl Chepkogei are twin sisters who study at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus in Mbuvo, Makueni County.

The two medical trainees grew up in Uasin Gishu County, where they witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by people living with disabilities, an experience that would later inspire them to pursue a career focused on restoring independence and improving lives.

Beryl and Sheryl began their education at Tuiyobei Primary School and later transferred to AIC Besiebor Primary School in Class Two, where they sat for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

In 2021, they joined Ndalat Gaa Girls Secondary School in Nandi County. During their secondary school years, the two brilliant girls developed an interest in healthcare.

Their path to KMTC started through conversations with friends and the growing presence of the institution on social media platforms.

“I kept seeing KMTC on TikTok and hearing about it from friends. The more we learned about it, the more we felt it was where we belonged,” said Sheryl.

The sisters carefully considered their options before finding a course that connected deeply with their personal experiences and agreed to study Occupational Therapy.

A Childhood Experience That Inspired Their Career Choice

Decision to pursue Occupational Therapy was influenced by their close relationship with a cousin living with cerebral palsy.

Growing up alongside him exposed the twins to the daily challenges experienced by people with physical and developmental conditions. They saw the importance of care, rehabilitation and support in helping individuals participate fully in everyday life.

“We saw the challenges he faced, and it was really tough. It made us want to help him and other people going through similar experiences,” says Beryl.

When the March 2025 KMTC intake was announced, the sisters reviewed the available courses and chose Occupational Therapy.

“When we learned that the course focuses on helping people live meaningful and independent lives despite physical, mental or developmental challenges, we knew this was it,” says Sheryl.

They describe their experience as rewarding, noting that the program has equipped them with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to become healthcare professionals.

According to them, life at the College involves attending lectures, preparing for examinations and participating in practical sessions to prepare them for real-world healthcare settings.

Being twins has also played a role in their academic journey. The sisters describe their relationship as a source of encouragement, motivation and strength.

“Growing up as twins has been a blessing,” says Sheryl. “We have always supported and motivated each other.”

A Future Dedicated to Transforming Lives

As they continue their studies, Sheryl and Beryl envision a future in which they use their skills to improve the quality of life for people who require rehabilitation services.

“After graduation, I see myself working in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, helping people regain their independence,” says Sheryl.

Sheryl also hopes to explore specialized areas such as pediatrics, neurology, and community-based rehabilitation.

The sisters would welcome the opportunity to work together in the healthcare sector while remaining open to pursuing different professional paths as they continue to build their careers.
