The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued exam room guidelines during the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) ahead of the tests.
To begin with, KNEC listed six best exam practices that KCPE and KCSE candidates should adhere to.
KNEC directed the candidates to be honest and complete their work independently.
“Maintain your integrity and refrain from sharing exam related information on social media,” said KNEC.
Further, KNEC said all candidates should report for exams in a timely manner to minimize anxiety.
Moreover, the Council urged candidates to dedicate ample time to study and revise thoroughly for success.
KNEC also warned students against using electronic devices like mobile phones during the examination period.
“Use your phone for communication at home but not during exams. Trust that KNEC has diligently prepared and secured the exams,” said the Commission.

Items in the Exam Room
Additionally, KNEC also listed items prohibited in the examination room during the coming national examinations.
To commence with, KNEC said candidates are forbidden from carrying electronic gadgets including but not limited to mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, body cameras, camera pens, earphones, and any item with Bluetooth capabilities into the exam rooms.
In addition, it criminalized the carrying of handbags, briefcases, backpacks and kiondo into the exam rooms.
“Written or printed material whether or not related to the paper being is prohibited,” said KNEC.
Further, the Commission banned materials written on items of clothing, footwear or on body parts that are not declared tattoos.
Candidates should also not be in possession of wristwatches and programmable calculators during exams.

KNEC Exam Dates
In a statement on Wednesday, October 18, KNEC announced that the rehearsals for the 2023 KCSE will start on Thursday, October 19.
The Commission said the rehearsal date for KCPE and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) is set for Friday, October 27.
According to the timetable, KCSE exams will start from October 23 and run up to November 24 continue.
On the other hand, exams for both KCPE and KPSEA will begin on Monday, October 30, and end on Wednesday, November 1.
KNEC is expected to engage 1,700 officers to monitor the administration of the exams.
The officers drawn not only from KNEC but also from other institutions were taken through a briefing on Monday, October 16 and Tuesday, October 17 at the KNEC headquarters.
