The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has finally set a date for opening its application portal.
KUCCPS CEO Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome confirmed that the placement process will officially begin before the end of the month.

Further, she reassured students that all eligible applicants will secure a place in universities and colleges, noting that institutions have declared a total capacity of approximately 300,000 slots.
The number of available slots exceed the 246,391 students who qualified for higher education through the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

“This week, we received the approved capacities from universities. They have declared capacities of about 300,000, so you can see that it’s more than the students who qualified for admission.
“We will place all students who qualified and who will apply for placement,” said Dr. Wahome.

Funding for Students After Admissions
On funding, Dr. Wahome clarified that although KUCCPS is responsible for placement, it does not oversee funding, which falls under the Universities Fund (UF).
Under the previous funding model, the cost of academic programs were displayed on the KUCCPS portal, allowing students to apply for scholarships and loans through UF and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
However, under the new model, placement and funding were de-linked.
At the same time, the High Court nullified the government’s university funding model in December 2023, and no decision had since been made following an appeal from KUCCPS.
“There was no clear understanding regarding KUCCPS and university funding, especially given that the current funding model was shaped by a court decision.
“We agreed to first open the KUCCPS portal, and by the end of this month, university portals will also be open,” Education CS Julius Ogamba told Members of Parliament while appearing before the National Assembly’s Committee on Education
