Students who received their KUCCPS 2026 placement results may find themselves admitted to courses or universities that were not their preferred choices.
While missing a first-choice programme can be disappointing, the placement outcome does not mean students have lost the opportunity to pursue their academic goals.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) provides different pathways for students who wish to change their course or institution, including transfers.
Universities and other accredited institutions offer additional alternatives for those seeking different academic routes.
KUCCPS Inter-University and Programme Transfer
KUCCPS inter university transfer process allows students dissatisfied with their placement to request a transfer to another institution provided they meet the required academic qualifications and the receiving institution has available capacity.
However, approval is not automatic and students must meet specific requirements before their transfer request can be considered.

These include meeting the minimum subject requirements for the desired programme and attaining the required cut-off points for that course at the receiving university.
To be eligible, a student must have been placed by KUCCPS in a university, TVET institution or other higher education institution. The applicant must also meet the minimum subject requirements and cut-off points for the programme they wish to transfer to.
Students can choose to change their institution, programme or both, depending on their academic qualifications and available slots. However, they can only apply for one institution and one programme at a time during the transfer.
A valid reason for requesting the transfer must also be provided. Depending on the circumstances, applicants may be required to submit supporting documents to justify their request.
Transfer applications attract a processing fee, which is paid through the official channels provided by KUCCPS.
Students are also advised to continue their admission preparations while awaiting transfer decisions, in case the transfer is not approved before the reporting deadline.
Changing Your Course After Admission
Students who are satisfied with their university but are unhappy with their allocated programme may explore internal course transfer options.
These changes are handled by individual universities and are subject to institutional policies.
A student who wants to change courses must meet the academic requirements of the new programme set by the university.
During selection, universities consider factors such as available spaces, entry grades, subject combinations and departmental approval before allowing a change.
However, highly competitive courses often have stricter requirements due to limited spaces.
Before applying for course transfers, Students are encouraged to consult their university admissions offices and academic departments for guidance on the possibility of changing programmes after admission.
Applying for Private Accredited Universities and TVET
Students who do not secure their preferred public university placement can also consider joining accredited private universities.
These institutions admit students who meet the required academic qualifications and may have different admission timelines compared to public universities.

Private universities offer a wide range of degree programmes and may provide opportunities for students who want to pursue specific courses that were unavailable during KUCCPS placement.
Students can also consider enrolling in diploma programmes and later upgrade to degree courses, joining Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, or applying directly to institutions with available vacancies.
Before deciding, students should confirm that the institution and programme are accredited by the relevant education authorities.
They should also compare factors such as tuition fees, accommodation costs, learning facilities and career opportunities associated with each option.
