The Mwananchi Party has emerged as a political vehicle linked to Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino ahead of the 2027 General Election, following developments involving the previously registered Muungano Party and the Linda Mwananchi movement.
This question of which political party should serve as the vehicle for Linda Mwananchi has become a point of disagreement within the alliance, with Ongili saying he is not prepared to surrender the party he secured before the movement was formed.
Owino said he met Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at his office on September 15 to discuss competing party options after the Ukombozi People’s Party was proposed as a possible vehicle for Linda Mwananchi.
He said he asked Sifuna about the proposal for Ukombozi to become the movement’s party and also raised the question of his own political vehicle.
According to Owino, Sifuna told him there was no problem with both of them holding party leadership positions, with Sifuna leading his party while Owino retained leadership of his own party.
“He was clear with me, told me that there is no problem, Babu, so that he gets the position of the party leader, the party leadership, and also Babu Owino becomes also a party leader of his party,” he said.
Owino reaffirmed his support for Sifuna’s presidential bid but said he had already secured his political party before the formation of Linda Mwananchi.
He said the party was part of a political journey he had started before the movement was established and that he intends to use it in his 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial campaign.
“On this issue of the political party, I had a journey that I was going on. I had a destination that I was looking at, that I was supposed to achieve certain things in life. I knew that a journey that had already formed me was the political party,” he said.
Owino said this was why he was reluctant to dissolve or surrender his party as part of negotiations to establish a single political vehicle for Linda Mwananchi.
Babu Owino Unveils The Mwananchi Party Membership Process
On September 21, 2026, Babu Owino posted instructions on how members can join The Mwananchi Party, outlining a USSD-based registration process.
The process requires prospective members to dial *509# and follow the prompts to complete their registration.

- Enter your first name as captured on your national ID.
- Enter your ID number.
- Enter a four-digit PIN.
- Confirm the details entered.
- Select “Join a party.”
- Select your County, Constituency, and Ward.
- Enter party code 050 for The Mwananchi Party.
- Confirm your registration details.
Details of The Mwananchi Party
The Mwananchi Party was originally registered as the Muungano Party, associated with former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana.
The party later began the process of changing its name to The Mwananchi Party (TMP).

In a Gazette Notice published on August 24, 2026, stated that Muungano Party intended to change its name to The Mwananchi Party under Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act.
“In exercise of the power conferred by section 20 (1) (d) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that Muungano Party (MP) intends to
change its party name to The Mwananchi Party (TMP).”
The notice opened a seven-day statutory objection period for members of the public and interested parties to submit written objections to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
