Truth Behind Murkomen, Gachagua And Their Expensive Watches

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of hypocrisy over expensive watches, claiming that Gachagua wore a Rolex Daytona worth KSh6.8 million during his engagement in Kajiado.

Murkomen also alleged that Gachagua has a collection of Rolex watches worth approximately KSh50 million.

“Today in Kajiado Mr. Rigathi Gachagua-the tribal jingoist- accused me of wearing an expensive watch, yet on the hand he held the microphone to spit tribal vitriol, he wore a Rolex Daytona watch worth Kenya shillings 6.8 Million,” said Murkomen.

In a spot check, Gachagua has been seen wearing luxury watches in public engagements, varying in models and brands.

Gachagua’s Alleged KSh6.8 Million Rolex Daytona

The Kenya Times has dug into the matter to determine if the claims are factual and the watch prices worn by Murkomen and Gachagua.

According to Rolex’s official 2026 US catalog, the Daytona comes in numerous configurations. The Oystersteel Daytona, reference 126500LN, is priced at US$16,900, equivalent to KSh2.18 million.

A two-tone Oystersteel and yellow-gold Daytona is listed at US$24,550, equivalent to KSh3.17 million.

Gold versions are substantially more expensive. Rolex lists some Everose-gold Daytona models at US$44,800, which is KSh5.78 million, while other configurations upto US$61,200. The platinum Daytona is listed at US$84,600, while another platinum configuration reaches US$91,200.

This means the KSh6.8 million claim by Murkomeni is within the official-price range of some Daytona configurations, but it does not prove that Gachagua’s particular watch is worth that amount.

Gachagua’s Collection of Luxury Watches

Gachagua has also been seen in public with classy watches including a Rolex Datejust featuring the distinctive Jubilee bracelet. Rolex’s official catalog shows that the price can change depending on configuration.

A Datejust 41 in Oystersteel with a Jubilee bracelet, reference 126300, is listed at US$9,150, approximately KSh1.18 million.

A more expensive Datejust 41 in Oystersteel and white gold with a fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, reference 126334, is listed at US$11,850, equivalent to KSh1.53 million.

Gachagua has also been seen wearing a Rolex Day-Date, recognizable by its President bracelet. The Day-Date is exclusively associated with precious-metal construction.

Rolex’s current catalog includes Day-Date 36 yellow-gold models from US$38,300, or equivalent to KSh4.94 million, while more elaborate gold and diamond configurations can exceed US$100,000.

The exact Day-Date worn by Gachagua has not been independently matched to a specific Rolex reference, so its precise manufacturer price cannot yet be established.

Gachagua has also been seen with an Invicta Pro Diver chronograph with a black dial. Invicta’s own catalog lists Pro Diver chronograph models, including the black-dial Pro Diver 22312 at €289,00, which is equivalent to KSh 43,109

Gachagua has been seen with luxury watches.  However, these figures cannot simply be added together to establish a KSh50 million collection. Murkomen’s KSh50 million figure remains an estimate based on his review of Gachagua’s social-media photographs.

No publicly available, independently verified inventory identifies every watch, its reference number and its manufacturer price and produces a KSh50 million total.

Murkomen’s Own Collection of Expensive Watches

Murkomen has himself been photographed wearing several high-end watches, and he also revealed his love for watches since he was young.

In June 2023, while serving as Transport Cabinet Secretary, Murkomen attended a Cabinet meeting at State House wearing a Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic King Gold.

Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic King Gold has several sizes, and the price depends on the exact model.

For the 42mm three-hand model (Ref. 542.CO.1181.RX), Hublot’s official US website currently lists the manufacturer’s retail price at US$14,300, before tax which is KSh1.85 million at KSh129 per US dollar.

For the 45mm version, Hublot’s official European pricing lists it at €15,200, while the 42mm is €14,100 in Hungary.

There is also a Classic Fusion Chronograph Ceramic King Gold 42mm, which Hublot lists at US$18,000, approximately KSh2.32 million.

Murkomen was also photographed wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master 37 in rose gold.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 37, reference 268655, made entirely in 18-carat Everose gold with an Oysterflex bracelet, is currently listed by Rolex at US$32,500.  At an exchange rate of KSh129 per US$1, it translates to KSh4.19 million.

In his July 2024 interview on Obinna TV, he said the most expensive watch he had personally bought cost KSh900,000.
