Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, who goes by the stage name Betty Bayo, was a renowned Kenyan gospel musician, famous for her great stage performance, excellent command of the Kikuyu language through her songs, and an angelic voice that strings merrily in musical chords.
Betty became renowned after releasing her first hit song, ‘Eleventh Hour, ’ which saw her gain an immense following and positive reactions from her fans.
Betty’s early life and Education
Beatrice was born on June 4, 1985, in Banana, Kiambu County, and grew up in a humble background. Betty Bayo attended Mihuti Primary School in Olkalou, Nyandarua County.
However, there is detailed information that Betty attended school. In her high school, her parents, whose identities have not been publicly disclosed, were at some point overwhelmed by her school fees, and she had to drop out of school at the Form 2 level.
She landed a job as a housekeeper and worked hard, saving to help pay her school fees, a step that enabled her to resume her studies after a two-year absence from class, thus completing her secondary school education.

Her music career spanned several years, with her releasing hit after hit in the Kikuyu, Swahili, and English languages, some of which were collaborations with Kenyan star artists like Rose Muhando.
Betty’s ‘Eleventh Hour’ hit steered her into publicity and made her popular for its widespread recognition. Other hits by betty include ‘Jemedari’ a composition that protrudes her vocal range and style, ‘Unamuwinda nani’ a song she featured Rose Muhando that showcases her great artistry and collaborative abilities as well as ‘Siyabonga’ and ‘Busy busy’ both boasting of a rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
These artistic creations garnered a huge following for Betty on her social media platforms, including a notable increase in play streams and YouTube subscriptions, which earned her a position as one of the most popular gospel ministers in Kenya.

Family
Betty was the ex-wife of the controversial city pastor and businessman Victor Kanyari, with whom she had two children: Sky Victor and Danny.
In December 2021, Betty got engaged and tied the knot in a traditional Kikuyu wedding with her current husband, Hiram Gitau, also known as Tash.
Betty Bayo’s Legacy
Through her music and ministry, Betty will be remembered for her great humility, openness, and especially for sharing her life experiences, which bring out hope and redemption, as well as inspiration on how she survived several tragedies, including a difficult marriage and battling a deadly disease.

Sickness and Death
Betty had been silently battling blood cancer, which is also known as leukemia, for some time, and on November 10, 2025, while receiving treatment at The Kenyatta National Hospital, she breathed her last at 40 years of age.
